P72 without cover for SD slot

2019-01-28, 1:28 AM

I purchased and received my P72.  I didn't order it with an SD Card reader (silly me).  When I received my notebook, the slot where the card reader should be isn't covered.  Is there a way to purchase a cover, or card reader to install myself?  Has anyone else had this problem and what was the resolution?

Thank you,

Brenda

Every piece of documentation I can find indicates all P72 machines have 4-in-1 card slots.  The optional slot is for smart cards, which are not common in the U.S.

What is a 4 in 1 card?  Is this something I can purchase separately and install myself?

That means it can deal with 4 kinds of cards including SD cards.  Just slide the card in.

Is it just me, or was the OP misinterpreted from the get-go? SmartCard readers ought not have entered into ths as far as I can tell.

The rectangular hole in the middle shown below on the right edge of the P72 IS the 4-in-1 SD card reader. It's installed by default within, and the hole is the slot in which you insert the SD/SDHC/SDXC/TF cards. Back in the day, a "dummy" filler card would be provided to fill it when not inserting an actual SD card which meant swapping the dummy in and out, and likely losing it in time.

The SmartCard reader slot is on the left edge. When it's empty, it signifies the reader is installed and SmartCards can be read. However, in the image below we see it looks filled. This is not a removable dummy card, but a fixed spacer that's inserted during assembly for models which don't include it, or when you DON'T choose the SmartCard reader option during a configuration. The slot is molded in the chassis on all models, and just gets filled this way so no dust gets in.

Now, if I have this right, the OP is concerned by the SD reader hole not being covered. I agree. Despite potential loss, a dummy seems a small cost compared to the overall cost of a premium laptop workstation the P72 is. In fact, not only does that go for the whole series,, it goes for the whole ThinkPad line. Cutting corners by not including a dummy makes the average person come to the conclusion the OP did, or at least wondering where in the box the dummy is.

You might argue not much dust may accumulate over time in an unused slot (I quite disagree), but either way it's an eyesore on any ThinkPad. :smileymad:

As for a cover, the OP could for dummy SD cards, but should be advised not all may fit flush on a P72. You have to eyeball which don't stick out too much, and it can really be hit and miss.

If by some chance you also have a SmartCard slot to fill, you can always slap a library card in there. :smileyhappy:

I can see into the motherboard from the smart reader slot.  I forgot to choose the smart reader option when I designed the computer and there isn't a dummy card in it.  It doesn't look like there is anything to read the cards inside.   I've attached a picture.

Again, just to clear up the confusion started when someone mentioned SmartCards...what you're pointing out is the "SD Card" (Secure Digital) reader slot, also called the 4-in-1 reader as it reads several types of cards that size.

The "SmartCard" reader reads cards like a credit card. It's on the opposite side of a P72.

What you picture is that empty SD card reader. It's there and you're seeing the gap where the mobo shows. There's nothing wrong with it at all, except Lenovo chose not to include a dummy filler card. Grab a full size SD card from a camera and pop it in to see that it fits and can be read.

It's also a standard option on this model and doesn't need to be added, so you are not at fault for anything.

Dude, thank you!  It's reading the card!  I didn't realize they put the reader in.  Thank you so very much.  I never thought to just put a card it.  I can't thank you enough!
