P73 THINKPAD causing printer to print wrong colors.

2021-07-06, 11:46 AM

Hello. I’ve used an HP D4360 printer in conjunction with a Gateway P-6318u laptop to print everything. I’ve had virtually no problems with my printer for over a decade. My Gateway OS is Win Vista. Since support for Vista has been terminated, I still use my Gateway to print images and text.

I purchased a new Lenovo P73 with Win 10 in May 2020. I connected my HP D4360 printer, with the latest drivers downloaded from the HP website. I printed text and images with great success for 10 months. Since then, blue is printing as pink and other colors are not true as well.

Then, I reconnected my Gateway back up to the printer and the printer worked great and true to color. So, the printer isn’t the problem.

I reconnected the Lenovo and ran a test page through the printer and that worked great. But when I printed some pictures, blue was pink and so on, back to the original problem. I tried removing all HP drivers and related software and printed some pictures and still, blue is pink, and so on. So, with or without the HP drivers, the problem is exactly the same.

At this point, I’m totally baffled. I’m using the latest Version (21H1) and keep my Lenovo up to date and still have this problem. According to the HP website, this printer works with Win 10 and it did for 10 months.

If there is any information or suggestions you may have to help me rectify this situation, I would greatly appreciate it?

Hello playdead,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

Was the printer working with the computer using the previous Windows build version 20H2?
You may try loading the BIOS default settings, be sure to save and exit.
Then go to the support site, download and install the latest BIOS.
Observe and update us how it goes.

Hello. No, I had the same problem with the prior version. I also reloaded the BIOS per your instructions and continue to have the same problem.

What else can I try?

Thx., Nick

It may be worthwhile to try the same laptop but with another printer  (latest edition as much as possible closer to the laptop manufacturing date).

This would help us isolate if there are issue with the machine itself or just a compatibility issue with the two products.

Hello and thank you so very much for your help. I don't have the money for a new printer right now. Since my printer still works with my old Gateway laptop, and I have lots of ink left, I'll have time to save for a new prnter. The one thing I'm curious about is that the printer did work fine with my Thinkpad for 9 or 10 months. This has me perplexed. I don't know if somewhere in the HP Driver download for my HP D4360 printer that they put in some code to cause this problem, hoping that I purchase a new printer. It sounds a little far-fetched, I know. Anyway, I appreciate all of your help. Have a great rest of your week.

Hello,

This could be due to an issue with the device drivers for the thirteen-year-old HP DeskJet D4360 printer, which may be different between Windows Vista and Windows 10.

Hewlett-Packard has their down dedicate forum for printer issues here.  Perhaps one of the D4360 experts there might have some suggestions about how to get the correct colors under Windows 10.

One more thing you could look at: COLOR MANAGEMENT.

If you look at Devices and Printers, and then right-click on your HP printer and select Printer Properties -> Color Management tab, and push the COLOR MANAGEMENT button.

Just like a monitor can make use of an ICC/ICM profile to implement color calibration and adjust how colors appear on screen, a printer is also a device that supports ICC/ICM profiles to impact how colors are produced on the printer. And just as you can "calibrate" a monitor or TV to present "perfect color" (based on use of a spectrophotometer to read the colors produced by the screen, and create an ICC profile to counteract imperfect color presentation), you can also "calibrate" a printer so that colors are printed "perfectly".

I'm just suggesting that if you've determined the identical printer connected to two different computers prints the same image with different colors, you've confirmed it's not the hardware printer which is at fault. Not a problem with nozzles, or ink tanks, etc. Definitely suggests a software problem, in the driver/color software. And that's why I suggest just looking into whether or not there is an ICC color profile associated with your printer on the Lenovo P73's "printer properties"  that is not on the Gateway's "printer properties".

Just an idea, for you to examine.

Hello and thank you for your help. I've checked on the color management and all is good there. I think you may be right about the drivers causing the problem. I joined an HP forum but no help or advice there yet. I appreciate your taking the time to advise.

Have a great week, Nick
