P73 performance issue after startup

2019-11-04, 8:44 AM

Hello

I have an issue with brand new P73.

After startup I have a huge drop in performance. for example, if I let’s say drag any window around my screen, it is not going smooth, it is moving in slow motion, lag

Here is video of a recorded event (https://youtu.be/ByxR4QNyk1I)

This happens almost every time on system startup and requires restart after which everything working fine.

This happens only when laptop is connected to dock

I have all latest drivers installed for everything

my system:

Thinkpad P73 (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9850H CPU @ 2.60GHz (12 CPUs), ~2.6GHz, 32GB RAM,NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000) + THINKPAD Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 230W + 2xTHINKVISION P24h MONITOR (DP cable)

This is somewhat of a known issue on several model when an external monitor is used. It is believed to be an Optimus bug.

You can try any of these:

- restart the graphic driver with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B

- kill dwm.exe is the Task Manager. Eventually several times

- change to "Discrete Only" in BIOS for video settings. This disable Optimus so if you use your laptop on battery often,

probably not a good idea

- some people have mentionned disabling fast boot in Windows settings

.

Lenovo ThinkPad P72 - i7-8850H / 48GB DDR4-2666 / 1TB Samsung 970 Evo / 1TB HDD / 17.3" UHD / Intel UHD 630 / Quadro P600 / 99W Battery / Linux distro: openSUSE Tumbleweed

This helped me too

I think it's a quite well known Intel/nVidia/Optimus issue with external monitors. I actually had it on more than one Thinkpad model, and it would eventually gets resolved a couple of months later, after a couple of driver updates.

Meanwhole, things may improve if you restart graphics driver (  Win+Ctrl+Shift+B ). A more reliable fix, if you rarely use the laptop while not connected to external monitors, is to set video to "Discrete only" in BIOS, leaving only nVidia.

Wow, I'm having a similar issue with the P53. It happens when I'm using my laptop without any monitor (e.g., at a meeting). I then come back to my desk, plug in external montior. It runs like crap and everything stutters. Rebooting with external montior solves the issue. Perhaps I'll try disabling fast boot.
