PROBLEMS INSTALLING TO C:/Program Files

2009-01-18, 2:54 AM

I am having problems installing in the default location C:/Program Files.  My computer just arrived yesterday and I have had nothing but problems and absolute rudeness from the tech support center in Atlanta, Georgia.  My case number is 12RBJDB for any administrators who would like to review the last employee.  Anyway, whenever I try to install ANY program (including the Lenovo Toolbox that customer "support" was so insistent I install) it pops up and says can not install to this location, folder is marked read-only.  If you try to go into my computer and change the folder, it simply says error changing attributes: access is denied.  The first support tech had me defrag my hard drive (which I just got yesterday) and from what I know has little to do with a problem of this type and the second guy simply told me it was a software problem and I should contact Microsoft or Adobe.  I just don't see how that can be true if I can't even install Lenovo's own products.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem, please let me know right away.  I have a temporary work-around.  I created a new folder on my c: drive called Program Files that actually work, and I can install to this location (as the folder I created isn't read-only), but this is super inconvenient as the default install location will still pop up as Program Files.  Thanks for your help and if you have an idea of who I can email about my customer service problems, please let me know!

Thank you,

Michelle Armand

Hi, Michelle,

If you haven't spent too much time yet on installing new programs,

how about booting to the Rescue and Recovery and bringing the laptop

to the factory default with carefully chosen default passwords?

That would take about an hour and would be something

I would try if nothing easy seems to work in your situation.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your reply.  I've only loaded a couple programs, so it wouldn't be a huge hassle - I was thinking of possibly putting on Windows XP 64 anyway.  Do you think this would help though, seeing as I just got the computer yesterday and I haven't tried to do anything else yet - past installing these first couple of programs (which didn't really go too well).  It basically is already at factory default and I have not set any passwords on the system.  Thanks for your help!

Re: PROBLEMS INSTALLING TO C:/Program Files

Hi, Michelle,

I have never owned a Vista computer but I could see by googling
that there is some security measures introduced in Vista
that can some times cause writing to Program Files to fail even
if you are logged in as an administrator.  You might want to check
it by googling "Vista Program Files". (If you are using Vista now.)

If I am asked what to do now in you situation, well,
if I could not find the solution by googling first
or by installing the latest MS updates, I would bring
the notebook to the factory default state and see if
the same problem occurs again.  During the reinstallation
procedure you may be able to encounter some hint of anomaly
so you'd better keep a digital camera handy.

And if you search for "XP 64" in this forum you could see
that XP 64 is not officially supported by Lenovo for
W series notebooks, which means some Lenovo specific hardware
drivers may be unavailable.  So if you dont' have urgent needs
for XP 64, I would try to stay away from it.

Good luck no matter what choice you make, and please keep
posting here the progress.

Regards,
Peter

Yep under Vista things are always more secured in contrast to Win XP and thus it (Vista) is also more pedantic when installing programs without having the right permission attributes etc.

First of all you should check, if you have the right permissions for performing write access  for the initial program files folder. You can look after this on the "security tab" and give your username the needed write access if it isn't setup there.

Usually the administrative user has write access to this folder, but applications cannot use this right, due to Vista security restrictions,  unless they ask the user for permission ("Windows needs your permission to continue" etc.). - Basicall, if you are wanting to allow none administrative users in Vista to read and write files using an application, try going to the search box in the start bar and type "MSCONFIG" run it and go to "Tools tab" and disable the "UAC protection". UAC stand for user account control and turning it off will allow other users to have more privilages. Hope this might help somehow...?

Thanks for all of your help guys.  I disabled the UAC and found a couple of updates that hadn't installed yet.  It solved the installation problems!  Thanks for the heads up about XP 64 and Lenovo compatibility!
