Pantone Color Calibrator Will Not Launch

2014-06-04, 22:03 PM

I have a ThinkPad W530 with color sensor and Pantone Color Calibrator. It has worked just fine since I got the computer brand-new over a year ago. For the last week or so, my color calibrator has failed to launch when I click on the "ThinkPad Display needs to be re-profiled" notification. I get the spinning icon, but after a few moments it just disappears. I've tried doing a restore, and chosen a time-point before I think this happened. But the system refuses to go back to that restore point because it "can't find a file." What the ????? I have not deleted any files from the system folders, I can only believe that one of my automatic updates has screwed this up. Of course, the message does not tell me what *kind* of file is missing.

I'm attempting a download and re-install of the Pantone Color Calibrator Program
pantone_color_calibrator_setup_v1_2_0_6455.exe from this page: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015010.

Hoping that will work, but has anyone else encountered this issue? And what did it turn out to be?

I'll report back on the results of the re-install, and thanks for any pother assistance.

Hello,

Check out my post here regarding a problem with the sensor in a W540, and in particular the link to the X-Rite Service Manager update. When run, it will report whether the sensor is present or not as I suspect your problem might be that the sensor itself might have malfunctioned. If not, the service will install and update the program. Then you have at least ruled out a sensor malfunction.

I'll montitor your reply. Cheers.

Re: Pantone Color Calibrator Will Not Launch

Well. THAT was interesting. The current version of the Color Calibrator installed very fast, with no "finish" popup or anything to let me know it was done. All the nagging icons disappeared. I went to my start menu and launched the Color Calibrator and ran it with no trouble at all.

My one issue with the operation was that I had set the "blue gamma" on the display up a little. I've worked with color for about 40 years, including being a Kodak VCNA (Video Color Negative Analyzer) operator at a professional photo lab back in the '70s. i *like* yellow, but when my posted photos come out looking *so* different on any other computer, I have to believe it's this screen.

So when I ran the color calibrator, it made everything yellow again. Be forewarned, it does not change your gamma setting in the display properties, it just overrides what you want and makes it what the Color Calibrator thinks you *should* want. Now I'm aware that I need to change the gamma back to 1.0 before I run the color calibrator, and set it back where I want it again afterwards. What a pain. Any better way to do this?

Well, what the Color Calibrator program really does is to create an ICC profile for your monitor, and you can manually set each profile you've created by:

Right clicking on your desktop - select Screen Resolution - Advanced Settings and finally the Color Management Tab.

In the Color Management window, you can see all the ICC profiles that have been created by the Color Calibrator, as well as the default ICC profile for the ThinkPad LCD. You can add remove these at your own leisure.

Thank you! Your suggestions are very good!

So, I walked through the color calibration process for the screen (setting neutral gray tones, this is something I can do). Then I applied the settings and chose that profile as my "default profile." So why, when I ran the Pantone Calibrator again (just to see what would happen), did it revert to the yellow again? It's easy to go back to my "default profile" again, but I really wish that Color Calibrator would *recognize it* as my default, and not make me jumpt through hoops every time.

I remember having a similar issue first after I upgraded my W520 to Windows 8, but when I ran the Color Calibrator as Administrator, it kept the settings as I wanted them. Just right click on your Color Calibrator shortcut in the Start Menu and choose Run As Administrator, that should fix this for you.

Hmm, that made no difference. The Color Caibrator still insisted on going back to the old yellow default.

For some, the sensor and calibration software is really limited in functionality.

Check this thread here for pointers on the issue:

OK, I've decided to do the calibration myself and use my calibrated settings as my default.

So how can I just turn off the Pantone Color Calibrator so that it won't bug me to use it (and have it re-set to the ugly ytellow screen)?

You can either right click on the Color Calibration icon in the Notification Area on your taskbar and choose Hide Re-Profiling Messages. Then it will be there if you decide to use it again, but you'll get no pop-ups. Keeping it has no impact on your system to my knowledge.

Or you can just uninstall the Pantone Color Calibrator software. As you experienced earlier, it's really simple to re-install if you ever need it again.
