Powering the P15 via USB Power Delivery

2020-09-15, 21:03 PM

The P53 platform specifications and P15 platform specifications have a curious difference in the port documentation. The P53 specifications say "Power Delivery only supports power-out for charging peripherals" while the P15 specs say nothing other than including the PD initials for a couple ports.

I know Power Delivery has a limit of 100W -- substantially less than the 170W+ the main P15 power supply provides -- but I'm curious if the P15 can use Power Delivery to charge and run lighter tasks. I like having Power Delivery chargers around my apartment as "universal" chargers that work with with our phones, current laptops (T580 and X1C Gen 7), and tablet/convertible computers (an old Pixel C and Pixelbook).

So, assuming I upgrade to Power Delivery chargers that can pump 100W, what can I expect for the P15?

Dear Customer,

unfortunately, ThinkPad P15 doesn't support battery charge via Tyep-c (Power Delivery) port which is the same as P53.

Please use 170W (or 230W) slim AC adapter.

In this case, what is ment by the battery specification?

Battery
    • Up to 16.4 hours (MM14)*
    • Up to 10.3 hours (MM18)*
    • Rapid Charge technology available with 65W AC
*All battery life claims are approximate and based on results using both the MobileMark® 2014 and MobileMark 2018 battery-life benchmark tests. Actual battery life will vary and depends on many factors such as product configuration and usage, software use, wireless functionality, power management settings, and screen brightness. The maximum capacity of the battery will decrease with time and use.

I tested a 2nd gen P15 with a USBC (65w) charger.  It seemed to use the charger fine.  I'm sure I could have run the machine in a way that would use more than 65w, but the battery would still discharge slowly.  If I was lightly using it, it would run off the charger or charge slowly.  At idle or in standby, the battery would charge.

Richk that is a very interesting discovery, why can't the laptop behave the same with 65, 90, 135W Slim tip charger?

I am afraid that Lenovo might block this in a firmware update now that it is discovered.

If you check the battery specification in the link I posted above, Lenovo advertises P15 to support "Rapid Charge technology available with 65W AC" so it may have been intended all along

I tested a 2nd gen P15

Do you mean a P1 Gen 2? I don't expect P15 Gen 2 to be available for quite some time.

I just saw on the site for T15g that it supports quickcharge with 230W.

presuming those models are similar, maybe there is no 65W quick charging in P15 after all?
