Problem connecting P50 with external ultra-wide monitor (3440x1440 @ 100 Hz) using Workstation dock

2017-12-09, 23:13 PM

When I connect my Thinkpad P50 to my external monitor (Samsung C34F741) directly using the mini Diplayport (connector on the side of the laptop) everything works fine. The resolution 3440x1440 @ 100 Hz and sound on the monitor speakers all work flawlessly.

However, when I connect the same external monitor to the Displayport of the Lenovo Workstation Dock (using the same cable), the video works fine (same resolution and refresh rate as above), but the audio on the monitor speakers lags behind the video. The lag is at first barely noticable but increases as time passes, eventually getting out of sync a few seconds.

I have the latest nVidia drivers and the latest Workstation Dock firmware installed. I am suspecting the external Displayport on the docking station is not capable of driving the high resolution at such a high refresh rate. Is there indeed a difference is specs between the laptop's Diplayport and the Docking station's Displayport? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

External monitors on the P50 are handled by the NVIDIA graphics card:

You didn't specify which external dock you're using.

Asumming the 230W dock, it matches the NVIDIA specification:

Which means, the P50 is capable of running a 3440 x 1440 display but not at 100 Hz.

And, yes, that's probably the reason of the sound issue (it's surprising the P50 can run a 100 Hz dsplay directly, though).

The table is not supposed to be interpereted literally. The idea is to multiply the number of pixels by the refresh rate and this is the maximum of the hardware, e.g. if 100x100@60 Hz is supported, then so is 100x50@120 Hz. That's the way I see it. That's also why P50 is able to drive a 100 Hz refresh rate if the resolution is low enough.

I've connected my P50 to all types of external monitors, projectors, etc.

I.e.:

and I've never had a problem (well, except for the HDMI port, but that's a whole other story).

To me (and, I may be wrong) as long as the vertical refresh rate is compatible with what the NVIDIA video card can output, there should be no issue.

I don't use my P50 for gaming and all my applications run fine on 60 Hz displays. Monitors with higher vertical refresh rates, like 120 Hz, are becomming more common/cheaper. If I decide to buy a new, faster, refresh rate display, I'd get a computer with a video card that, explicitily, supports it.
