Problem with P50 and latest Quadro video drivers (M1000M).

2017-08-12, 19:32 PM

Hi;

I just got a P50 EQ20 with M1000M video (I believe). This seemed to be working o.k. until I tried installing the Lenovo video drivers from the Lenovo P50 download site. The 'ThinkPad Video Features (NVIDIA N16S / Quadro N16P) for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad P50' ones. (These say they are version '22.21.13.8229/21.20.16.4550'.)

After that, the Thinkpad display had a serious display problem. Even though it appeared that the resolution was still set to 1920x1080, everything was compacted down to the maybe the middle quarter of the laptops screen. There were large black bars at the top bottom left and right of the actual area being shown.

This made everything very small and mostly illegible.

With some great effort, and some guessing at what I was actually selecting, I was able to uninstall the new drivers and everything is working again (apparently with the older 22.21.13.8205 drivers).

Are these the right drivers and do they work for everyone else?

They seem to be the same ones listed if I run 'Lenovo Companion'/'Lenovo system update'. But, trying to install this from there results in a 'failed install' for some reason.

I am currently running Windows 10 1703 and again using the Nvidia driver 22.21.13.8205. I have it set in BIOS to 'Discreet mode', so I think it is only using the Nvidia drivers. It is booting in Secure boot/UEFI only. The BIOS is 1.43.

Thanks;

State your full machine type and model number.

You either have a Nvidia Quadro M1000M or a M2000M.

The driver on the support pages does support your graphics card +Intel HD in same package.

Looks like a Lenovo bug to me in the Lenovo System Update .XML install logic.

Hi. I have a 20EQ-S3B400.

I guess the question is whether the issue I saw was peculiar to my install, or if this is a general problem.

I'm a little hesitant to try it again since last time I was barely able to find my way back...

Thanks.

I can not find your model in PSREF, probably a special build, no big deal.

http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P50

See above post. Hide SU recommends for this driver.

For best results(kinda), use www.nvidia.com support page.

Windows might sneak in THEIR version at times.

You state:

This seemed to be working o.k. until....

If it is not broke, dont fixit!.

Thanks. It was a bit tricky to find the Quadro drivers here. I needed to to go to the Drivers/All Nvidia drivers. (I had started at Drivers/Geforce drivers thinking they would be there).

And then the M1000M wasn't listed as a choice in the search (althought the M2000M was, and the drivers it lead to said that it supported the M1000M.)

These are currently listed as version 'R384 U1 (385.08)'.

I'll have to see if I'm brave enough to try them before someone chimes in if the Lenovo provided ones work for them...

I did say kinda w/Nvidia.

99% of the time the USER..it is here.. is proved wrong. It is in the totally opposite direction.

Your post 5 was excellent from a PD viewpoint.

Instead of getting graphics driver fussy, buy an external USB-HDD from Seagate with Seagate dashboard, incremental backups (www.nero.com inside). Buy it on sale.

It can also hold your windows system image backups. Turn off system restore checkpoints [waste of space, fails at times].

I can restore my system in 45 minutes to 4 pm yesterday, and with vendor backups 10 am today.

You can also drag/drop all your loved photos, mystery pics, c/drivers, etc.

You state wish a forum user will chime in their Lenovo driver worked.

"aint gonna happen".  You have already shown this failure will occur.

The additional reference post shows similar failure.

Re: Problem with P50 and latest Quadro video drivers (M1000M).

2017-08-14, 22:35 PM

Further discovery upon looking inside c\Drivers\NvidiaGraphics:

(1)It contains Intel HD P530 graphics driver 21.20.16.4550 .

(2)It contains Nvidia driver 22.21.13.8229. 5/16/2017 .

Otherwise known as package version 382.29

(3) The support page description needs clarity:

a. M2000M is N16P-Q3-A2 processor. Quadro.

b. M1000M is N16P-Q1-A2 processor. Quadro.

c. A N16S is a Geforce 940M  or similar.

If a user uses latest Nvidia.com driver, it may or may nor work. Check Nvidia forum.

If a user uses a higher level Nvidia driver than what is on the Lenovo support page, and Lenovo System Update offers the same update over and over,.... then Lenovo would have to explore contents of the SU .XML install logic. I have no way to confirm if this is a bug in SU .XML install logic. Lenovo SU .XML logic has been known to have bugs at times.

If it is not broke, do not fixit.  Being real current is not all fun at times, especially with new machines, like a P50.

Please avoid BIOS updates.
