Problematic Seagate 500g on w520 model: ST9500420AS (reallocated event count warning!)

2011-09-06, 18:52 PM

I saw a lot of posts about problems with the Seagate HD I think that deserves a new post..

HD tune identifies I got a problem with the reallocated event count which is 46 (and increasing ..)

tried to use speedfan 4.44 tests on the HD and it said its OK

I used the indept online analysis in http://www.hddstatus.com and it showed me a differente warnning about

Seek Error Rate 62 1643434 Watch
Warning: Seek Error Rate is below the average limits (63-100).

full diagnostic: hddstatus.com analysis

the reallocated event count was showen as OK... i wonder if its because the machine is barnd new and the count isnt high enough to be treated as a potential risk...

if anyone could post some info about that and what you recommend that should be done with the current HD...

thanks

Maor

i've been looking around at seagate forums...

they say

"The only test that provides accurate results for Seagate drives is the SeaTools diagnostic test."

hmmm

why i feel ripped off?

I don't trust Seagate drives.

That said, your drive is probably failing. Back up your data, and warranty it.

I will never put another Seagate drive in a machine of mine.

@ColonelONeill

how did you manage to get Hitachi drive?

did you buy it seperatly and installed it yourself?

or it just came with it?

you think they will change the HD for me even tho there is no real problem at the moment?

This is my test, as you can see seek error rate is at 68. The machine has 2 weeks of life.

Anything that's "not Seagate" would be my choice. At newegg, 23% of user reviews give the above Seagate drive a 1-star rating, which generally represents drive failure. The equivalent Hitachi hard drive at newegg has 14% 1-star reviews.

That's enough for me not to want that Seagate drive.

According to Seagate "The only test that provides accurate results for Seagate drives is the SeaTools diagnostic test" because the other tests tell you that the drive is dying right out of the box.

This a Toshiba Drive MK5061GSY and is probably the loudest hard drives I've ever had.  IMO it makes more vibration and noise than my two VelociRaptor 300GB 10'000RPM drives.

It was such a noisy drive that I absolutely had to replace it with an SSD.
