Problems creating a data partition

2009-02-09, 22:29 PM

I would like to create an extra partition on my w500 for my data.

While windos (XP) itself does not show problems with the 2 existing partions (pre-load and service), no commercial (partition magic) nor freeware (gparted) tool was able to create a new partition. Both tools actually fail to see any partition.

I ran TestDisk 6.9 and get the following error message:

#1 Incorrect number of heads/cylinder 240 (NTFS) != 255 (HD)

#2 Space conflict between the following two partitions (* HPFS - NFTS  and  P Compaq Diagnostics)

TestDisk then allows for searching partitions created under VISTA. Only then I get the correct information.

 Just wondering if anyone knows a solution to this problem?

thx!

I guess I found at least an explanation.

VISTA is redefining the way partitions are created and organized.

(see http://www.multibooters.co.uk/partitions.html for more information)

The XP downgrade LENOVO offers must be built on a VISTA partitioning system.

In the end this means though that my options are very limited and I either have to upgrade to VISTA or start from scratch :(

I would backup all your files then do a clean install of XP, if you really want to keep XP, and then format the drive, partition and then restore the files. I didn't know about Vista's issues, but I just used gparted and TestDisk to create an NTFS partition on an external Mac HFS drive, which was headache-y, so I'm mildly interested in keeping abreast of problems people are having.

I suggest, though, upgrading to Vista. The security and driver model are so much better, even though I pay for it somewhat with rendering and OpenGl performance.
