Quick: Resolution setting faulty/help for W500 LCD?

2009-01-15, 14:49 PM

Hi. Just a quick questions, I've tried this with both graphics cards and have the same issue. Unless I keep my display settings to 1680x1050 pixels, my screen stays fuzzy. The vista start bar, side bar, internet explorer windows, thinkvantage windows, everything is not sharp/crisp.

I tried to use 1440x900, 1280x1024, 1280x800 even 1024x768 but all of them are unclear. Kept the color settings to the Highest 32 bit, and tried making the change through windows, through the graphics options too - but there was no improvement. I changed the dpi settings too, didn't help.

Am i missing something? Has anyone managed to lower their resolution, and have a good clear image onscreen? I'd really appreciate some advice/help here... Because I paid for this machine but am having trouble looking at it and using it!!!

My 15" R51 has 1024x768 and its display is much better at that resolution than my w500?

"I must say, I'm shocked! That is very disturbing, all these advances in technology, and my new high resolution laptop display can't even display a resolution my 5 year old laptop displayed perfectly."

If it could display other screen resolution clearly it would be the first LCD in history to do that. It is just physically impossible to display, lets say, 1024 pixels with 1680 spots. Or lets say you want to distibute 1024 rocks in 1680 boxes evenly. The best thing the display can do is to display the pixel that falls between two spots blurry on both spots.

The workaround I could think of is to buy a display that has twice the resolution your old one did and than set it to half. So that one 4 physical spots (2x2) on the screen display one pixel =)

Yet I understand how you are not satisfied with the new pixel size. You could try messing with the font DPI in Vista and make fonts about the same size they were on the old display, helps with the overall system look but it makes most of the program windows blurry (like everything - skype, AutoCAD, web browser). I suggest using the scalling option whitin the program, if there is one (like full page scalling in some webbrowser)

Gnerally speaking, as I understand the whole LCD screen technology thing, thses sort of displays display best at their "built-in"/"as designed"  so-called native resolution. This applies whether it is a laptop LCD or a standalone monitor LCD.

In you case (as with my W500) the "native resolution" is 1600x1050. Any thing else and you can expect just what you are seeing - fuzziness.

It is no a "lenovo-thing", it is a 'hardwired" (so-to-speak)  LCD display thing.

Thanks for the reply. I must say, I'm shocked! That is very disturbing, all these advances in technology, and my new high resolution laptop display can't even display a resolution my 5 year old laptop displayed perfectly.

If there is any way around this (software, utility, trick), I'd really appreciate if anyone could let me know...

No there is no.

Go for a T500, it can be configured with 1280x800.

Hi, I also bought a W500 but with even higher resolution (1920*1200), The screen looks fine, but the characters are too small. I think that it is not so good for my eyes, so I change the resolution to 1680*1050, and it looks better now, though it is not that clear as before.

So, just find a resolution which fits you and your eyes. That's my advice.
