RAID config in W530

2012-06-25, 13:05 PM

Q1: Can I put two SATAIII(6Gbps) SSDs in internal and Optical Bays and Configure them with RAID 0 or 1.

Q2: Is the mSATA moudle compatible with availabe standard SATA3 SSDs in the market?

Thanks

I'm also wondering if you can set up a raid after the fact and not choose "raid configured" from ordering through lenovo.

Perhaps someone who has a W530 can check in BIOS if there is an option for RAID.

To configure the UEFI BIOS for RAID, do the following:
1. Press F1 to enter the ThinkPad Setup program.
2. Select Config.
3. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
4. Select SATA Controller Mode Option, and then the following options will be displayed:
• Compatibility
• AHCI
• RAID

A1:  Yes, but only if you order the system from Lenovo with RAID support.  If you do not order the system from Lenovo with RAID support, then the RAID option ROM is not installed at the Lenovo factory, and it is not possible to add it later.

A2:  mSATA is SATA2 (3gbps).  The main HDD bay and the ultrabay are SATA3 (6gbps)

Thanks

I saw mSATA3 opting just in T530 customization, so why not in W530?

Q3: I just read mSATA SSD is used only for the cache function and the intel Rapid Start Technology(in Hardware maintenance Manual T530 ,W530). this means I can not use that for storing my data in any way? can I turn this feature off and use the mSATA SSD capacity in my own storage. thanks

You can always set up a software RAID. With only two drives, there isn't that much of a performance overhead.

Re: RAID config in W530

So I just purchased my W530 about a week ago; it should arrive on Friday.

I was told before purchasing that even if I chose not to have RAID enabled by Lenovo that I would be able to set it up myself later.  It sounds like this is not the case?

Is there any chance that a BIOS flash could enable RAID?  Or is there a hardware controller that is simply missing in the non-raid version?

Yes, the hardware controller is missing in the non-raid version
