Rapid Start: Hibernation Partition Size with 24 GB RAM

2013-03-12, 11:00 AM
I ordered my W520 with 24 GB RAM and need some advice how to size the hibernation partition to use Intel Rapid Start Technology. By default the hibernation partition was 8 GB which is the standard RAM.
What size should I use 24000, 24576 or just the size of my hiberfil.sys (only 18.541 MB)?
I'm afraid to waste SSD space.

I think you'll have to size it at least 24576 MB.  The hiberfil.sys file is compressed and I could never be sure that the Rapid Start Technology file would use the same compression settings. It seems like it I could only get it to work right when I added something like an extra 2 MB to my ram total, e.g., your partition might need 24578 MB. Rapid Start wasn't installed on my system from the factory so I kind of had to wrestle with it to get it working right.

You could try setting the compression using "powercfgh -size 50" which might mean you'd only require a size of 12288 MB but I don't really think that will work. . .  But if you try it and it works, let me know!

You can't create a partition for the hiberfile. As far as I know it HAS to reside on C: :-(

Personally I disable hibernation all together and use sleep-mode instead.

Sleep-mode = freeze and poweroff everything except for the RAM, which draw a tiny bit of power to keep its contents. Resume from sleep-mode is instant.

When I don't swiftly turn off the computer to sleep-mode, I turn it off for real. I think this is a good idea, to restart the Operating System and all running apps every now and then.

I think the shutdown time and startup time with compressed hibernation enabled is not that much faster than an orderly shutdown or boot.

By disabling hibernation, you free up many GB on your SSD.

To disable Hibernation and free many GB from C:

Start CMD.EXE with elevated privileges and type:

POWERCFG -H off

As kayphoonstar writes, you can reduce the size of hiberfil.sys by 50% by enabling compression
Start CMD.EXE with elevated privileges and type:

POWERCFG -H -Size 50

Re: Rapid Start: Hibernation Partition Size with 24 GB RAM

What the OP was actually asking about was something from Intel called "Rapid Start" which uses a hibernation partition on an SSD instead of hiberfil.sys.  The Hibernation partition can actually reside on a separate SSD, e.g., an mSata drive.  My comment was meant to suggest that the command discussed would not affect the needed size of the hibernation partition on the SSD, i.e., it needs to be the as large as the available RAM in order to function correctly.
