Received my W540 today - First impressions!

2013-12-23, 12:51 PM

I finally received my Thinkpad W540 today, and want to share some photos and first impressions with you all!

It seems like a very nice laptop, well built, very compact and clean looking and has a fantastic 3K display. The display has virtually no backlight bleeding, has good color saturation (haven't checked color space yet) and has a very fine semi-matte anti-glare coting. It's definetely matte, but not as matte as older displays. Feels like some higher end Eizo displays in terms of coating.

If you have any questions about this fine computer, feel free to ask! I've just opened it and played around a bit, so I'll come back with more first impressions soon!

PS. I'm in Norway, so I guess we're quite early on the release schedule. I'm sure it'll be shipping to the rest of the world very soon.

Noise, fan rpm at idle and low load?

Optimus operation: Can you disable the nvidia for lower power?

I just got my w540 on the 20th(specs appear to be identical to yours). Are you noticing poor battery life on your w540? I have 2 w540's and I'm only seeing around 5 hour battery life with the extended 9 cell battery. I also cranked on all the power save features with little help.  Both of mine also have bad backlight bleading on the bottom right corner. It appears to be from too much pressure from the bezel.

Oh and i would recommend NOT to to install windows 8.1 from a fresh install. The drivers are currently very unstable from the website.

Very happy with the IPS panel and color sensor, but really annoyed by the mouse buttons integrated in the trackpad. The left button must be pressed in the utter left corner otherwise it acts as a right click. I cannot change it via the mouse properties :(
Also I cannot appreciate moving pgup/pgdn buttons away from ins/del/home/end .

"Also I cannot appreciate moving pgup/pgdn buttons away from ins/del/home/end"

Besides dropping the TP light, breaking the above cluster is one of the biggest productivity killers. I don't care sharing the same kb layout w/ any $300 cheapo, and yet i wonder how to relabel the keys to emulate that cluster of Home/End PgUp/Dn.

@gusat,

since the W540 has a Numblock, there is also Home/End-PgUp/Dn cluster built in, which can be used when NumLock is disabled, see:

@ibmthink: So, I have a numblock which I can not use as numblock since I have to disable it to get 2 pairs of PgUp and PgDown which are both not where they are supposed to be? Do you work for Lenovo? Ideapad design?

Quick suggestion; users are complaining about the loss of the two row Ins Del Page-up Page-down Home End keys. May I suggest adding a bios switch to change the 5x3 numpad to 2 rows of ins del page-up page-down home end keys and 3 rows of direction keys? Would be appreciated.

I would doubt Lenovo is going to do that.

There are many other programs that can do it for you though.

Here is one that I haven't checked with windows 8 or W540 but it might be worth a try:
