Recent update to Lenovo Update Service eats 100% of a CPU core

2021-02-05, 12:05 PM

The Lenovo service called "System Update" seems to either be data mining my computer, or has a major flaw causing it to run in an infinite loop. The executable is SUService.exe -- if you look in Task Manager you'll see it's eating as much CPU as it can. This is unacceptable, Lenovo! But we have no way to contact Lenovo about SOFTWARE support. Even though I am a paying Premier Support member, I can only submit tickets about hardware.

Sorry for this trouble.  We removed the version of System Update (5.07.0113.0) that causes this problem, and re-released the previous version (5.07.0110.0) that doesn't have this problem.  So you'll see 5.07.0110.0 on the website as of this moment:  https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds012808

In addition to this, we are preparing a new version (5.07.0117.0) which fixes this bug.  So that people who downloaded and installed 5.07.0113.0 will be able to update to the fix version as soon as it's released, hopefully later this week.

Hello allquixotic,

Greetings!

I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with the Lenovo system Update software.

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.
Also kindly provide the Operating system info such as the OS version and build.

Update us soon as convenient

Regards,
Lorenzo_Lenovo

I have the same issue also.  Update Service does this on my computer's startup.  Unable to stop Update Service in Task Manager.  Just have to wait or restart my computer.

Hi,

I have a ThinkPad P15 Gen1. 20SUS09800. There are other threads on this very forum reporting this problem, and several people confirming it on Reddit, so it is definitely not just me. This is a genuine issue. Stop wasting peoples' power, Lenovo. Fix this.

Correction...System Update runs continuously until I use Task Manager to stop it.  Task Manager does stop System Update for me.

Good day.

Please see this discussion from this post to the end of the thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile-Workstations/Lenovo-System-Update-Service-32-bit/m-p/5064876?page=1#5252885

Something to at least check and test.

Regards.

Re:Recent update to Lenovo Update Service eats 100% of a CPU core

Removing the offending application is hardly a solution to the problem. The Lenovo System Update Service (the legacy one, not the Vantage one) ships with every standard Lenovo image as far as I'm aware. Right this moment this software bug is wasting kilowatts or even megawatts of energy all across the globe. Many users won't even notice the problem.

Yes, you can technically stop this service from eating up your CPU by killing it, disabling it, or removing it, but the problem is that SUService.exe runs in an infinite loop and consumes an entire CPU core. Without a patch to the software, no other fix is satisfactory.

That's like saying "my engine constantly redlines itself when idle" and the mechanic tells you, "Well, turn off your car and it won't do that!" SMH.

I posted the reference to the other thread because several members with the same issue reported a positive outcome.

I have searched my relatively new, and my newest, machines, all running Lenovo factory Win10Pro images: X1 Yoga gen4, X1 Tablet gen3, X1 Fold gen1, and X1 Nano gen1. All of them have only the Lenovo Vantage application installed. There are no signs of the Lenovo System Update application or its SUService.exe on them anywhere that I can find.

I understand that you, and others, are frustrated, but maybe some of this information will help lead to a formal solution more palatable to you and others. My wild guess is that on machines with both the Vantage and SU apps installed that their background services get into some kind of a clash. Again, it is only a guess. I am not a programmer.

Regards.

Thing is, I never explicitly downloaded the Lenovo System Update Service onto my machine. It was either baked into the image, or one of the other tools I downloaded ships this service.
