Re:Replace Intel AC-7260 WiFi Adapter in W541?

2021-05-29, 16:57 PM

Dear all,

I hope I'm in the right thread, but since I upgraded my W541 to Windows 10 20H2, I experience 3 or 4 Wifi disconnection everyday :-(

I have tried many parameters suggested for AC 7260 Dual Band adapter with no success.

I re-installed the latest driver from Intel : 18.33.17.1 but I still experience disconnections.

Any solution ?

It seems that many people complain about AC 7260 from Intel :

Intel Web site mentions that this chip is out of support which is very frustrating regarding the price paid for my Lenovo W541 workstation.

Can Lenovo provide a solution ?

All other devices work fine on my Wifi access point on 5GHz, channel 64.

Thank's in advance for any help.

As stated in this thread and elsewhere, you can try different options.

The easiest is to buy a new 7260 adapter, it costs around 10-15USD. Look for brand new ones only as there is a suspicion that they can develop disconnects as a result of hw degradation over time. Just replace the adapter and see if things improve. Sometimes re-aseating the adapter and attach/disconnecting the antenna wires can help.

I have a W541 with Windows 21H1 but mostly use wired but have not experienced anything strange with 7260, so I don't think it is a general software issue.

If you are advanced and have access to hacking tools you can mod the BIOS to remove the whitelist and install something newer.

Thank's for your feedback.

I'm afraid it is not a hardware issue.
It's really since the major upgrade to 20H* that the symptom appeared.

It is highly frustrating to be said that this HW is not supported anymore on such an expensive laptop (W541).

Lenovo should work on this problem and provide a patch for the driver.

Do you know where we can get older versions ? Seems not available from Intel web site.

Installing an old version of the driver may help, but some older versions have security bugs that we should not re-introduce.

Can Lenovo help here ?

Thank's in advance and best regards.

Many thank's for your prompt feedback, but again, older version may have security bugs.

Could Lenovo work on current version of the driver ?

Many thank's again and best regards.

P.S.

Direct access to https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/NZ0WJ10W_64.exe is OK,

but access to https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles or https://download.lenovo.com

       is denied for me :-/

OK, many thank's for the follow-up.

I've installed the version pointed in the table in your previous message.

I have had one disconnection today morning, but I'm observing after another system reboot.

Are there any logs which might be usefull in case of disconnection ?

Best regards.

Re:Replace Intel AC-7260 WiFi Adapter in W541?

Dear All,

Here are the steps I followed :

  1. Uninstall driver using Device Manager AND Windows Settings -> Applications (Intel ProSet)
  2. Install NZ0WJ10W_64.exe (thank's again freddellmeister)
  3. Reboot
  4. Test a few days : wifi still disconnecting 2 or 3 times a day :-(
  5. Unistall driver using Device Manager
  6. Reboot
  7. Re-install latest driver available from Intel
    /https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downloads/eula/28621/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Intel-Wireless-7260-Family?httpDown=https%3A%2F%2Fdownloadmirror.intel.com%2F28621%2Fa08%2FWiFi_21.10.1_PROSet64_Win10.exe
Back to version 18.33.17.1 of the driver
  8. Reboot

No disconnection anymore since 2 days...
Access point still set on 5Ghz, channel 64

It seems that playing with drivers (un)installtion has re-initialized something (in some HW register or UEFI ?)

If disconnections happen again I'll let you know.

Best regards.

Re:Replace Intel AC-7260 WiFi Adapter in W541?

2021-06-12, 10:34 AM

Dear All,

Since I'm back it means that disconnections had happened again :-(

It worked a few days, until I... installed the latest Windows patches !!!!

The day after (yesterday), I had 2 disconnections again.

Note that after applying latest Windows patches and reboot twice, the AC-7260 driver was still at version 18.33.17.1.

Today morning, I have uninstalled again the driver (unistalled device from Device Manager and uninstalled Intel Wireless ProSet from Windows Settings -> Applications)

System reboot : the dirver was at version 17.something.

Re-install latest Intel Wireless ProSet, then reboot.

Driver is at version 18.33.17.1 again.

Let's monitor.

Stay tuned...

Re:Replace Intel AC-7260 WiFi Adapter in W541?

2021-06-15, 11:21 AM

Dear All,

Unfortunately, it seems I'm back to square 1.

I retried all steps without success :-(

What a frustration.

When the Wifi disconnects, I have to restart my Virtualboxes running Ubuntu which cannot reconnect even after Wifi has reconnected.

After latest patches, I've got a notification to install Windows10 21H1 Build 19043.1055

Same problem, even after installing previous versions of the driver et re-installing the latest available.

:-(
