Ricoh PCIe SCXC/MMC card reader not recognizing cards...

2015-03-19, 14:03 PM

Hi,

Just did a clean (well, Lenovo Restore clean) Win 7 Pro 64 bit install on my 2441 W530.  The issue is that the card reader doesn't seem to recognize cards.  The Driver is installed and claims to be "working properly".  But if I shove a card in the slot and have it click in, nothing happens.  No little "thudump" noise from the O/S, no recognition of the drive in Windows Explorer.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

J

Hello,

If you boot the W530 from a Linux Live CD and attempt to access an SD Card, is it then recognized?  If not, I would say that it is a hardware issue (perhaps the internal card reader apparatus is loose).

Aryeh,

Thanks. I've never used Linux on my laptop*.  I could create a Debian or Ubuntu boot disk and try this, but I've just bought some zippy (32Gb  fo PC-3 14900 XMP) memory for my W530. As an aside, unfortuately, buying memory from Amazon is like ordering stuff from the Sears catalog in the 1920s - I have to wait more than a week for delivery! (Boy, I sure am spoiled by B&H Photo - I order stuff in the afternoon and I get it the next day!**).

Anyway, I have to pull the keyboard to install memory, and to upgrade the wi-fi from the 6205 to a 6300.  When I pull the top bezel I'll check the SD unit cable seating.

Will advise.

Jim

*Strange, becuase I used Unix on Decstations in grad school.  My co-student John Eaton (of Octave fame) set up a very efficient Unix system at Texas that we all used.  I owe a lot to John.  Then again, he spoiled me. I've never found subsequent work environments to be anywhere near as what John set up.  Thanks, jwe!

**B&H did not have the memory in stock.  So I ordered from Amazon.  I think Crucial allows others to sell this memory for a little cheaper, but keeps tight controls on it - they ship directly from the factory.  Anyway, I can get an SSD in less than 24 hours, but memory takes a week..   Sigh.
