Running a W540 parallel with a P50

2017-09-08, 9:00 AM

Dear community,

I bought a W540 about 3,5 years ago and was using it for graphic (2D/3D) purposes both for university and professional work. My present employer gave me the option to decide weither I want an Apple device or not so I picked a P50 configuration that suited my needs. I now moved to another country and have the W540 and the P50 with me but no external monitor device (at least so far).

Is there any option to run these guys simultaneosly ? Like using one only as a display ? I could ofc sell my W540 and get a proper screen -but I can keep the P50 only as long as I continue to work for my company (or I might buy it from them when if I quit).

Thank you for any kind of help and

warm regards from the North,

Mirko

Don't know if this would help but there is an interesting experimental product that you might want to try from Microsoft Garage, called "Mouse without windows."  I tried it with a P70 and W700 and it seemed to work..

Good luck!

Neither machine has video capture hardware, but there are 34mm express cards that can provide that sort of function.  I have used a Miracast adapter to send video from a P70 (similar to a P50) to an external screen.  I used a Yoga Home 900 because it has an HDMI-in video capture port, but a W540 with an express card video-in port would probably work also,

Thank you both for your replies. I will try the MouseWithoutBorders as soon as I have access to both devices. Looks intereseting at least although I am little bit worried about latency.

But good to know that there is a hardware alternative as well!

The latency of sharing just the mouse between machines will be far lower than sharing the actual display. Plus you get to use the computational power of both machines (one for rendering, one for everything else).
