SSD M.2 ThinkPad w540 20BH-S0QS00

Hello , I have  ThinkPad w540 20BH-S0QS00 with 500Gb SSD sata III already installed, i wanted to increase the storage without loosing the Cd drive , Can i use the empty m.2 slot near the WLAN card ( in the bottom of the laptop )  to install 1TB 2242 M.2 SSD ??

Welcome to the forum.

 

According to ThinkPad_W540_WE.pdf "M.2 Solid State Drive (SSD), via M.2 card slot, exclusive with WWAN card." 

 

Note however, this is a SATA M.2 slot. It doesn't support the newer, faster and more common M.2 PCIe/NVMe drives.

thank you for your reply, may I ask why there is an empty slot then ??? I see I have one WLAN card installed so what is the advantage to have an empty slot ?? does my laptop take another WLAN ??

The empty slot is for a WWAN card. Some ThinkPad models are "WWAN-ready" meaning they have the card slot, antennas, SIM holder, etc. but not the WWAN card itself.

I installed a Transcend 512GB 42mm M.2 SSD 430S works fine.

I am succesfully operating 512GB UMAX  2242 SSD in m2sata slot of my W540.
