Re: Several P50 questions regarding SSDs and supporting 3 external monitors

2016-03-30, 19:34 PM

I had one working fine without any pad or tray and it was working fine.  As I have said before, I think they sort of *snap* into the socket.  They may back out with heat, but I didn't jostle the machine much.  I think it would be nice if some aftermarket firm would make CNC machined aluminum ones to replace the plastic ones.  With thermal throttling being a known problem with 950 Pro drives, it would be nice to have a heat conducting tray rather than an insulator.

P50, Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5, 4K, NVidia Quadro M2000M 4GB, Dual Samsung 950 PRO 512GB NVMe drives non-RAID, 32 GB Crucial Technology DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000). Windows 10 Home.

Does anybody know what SSD brand and model you get if you order your P50 with a 512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe from Lenovo?

I do not know; but, I would not, and did not, do it.  For less than $750 I bought *two* 512GB Samsung 850 Pros and the two required trays from Lenovo.  I am using one NVMe to back up to the other (non-RAID).  The install is simple.  From what I have read the Samsung 950 Pro is the fastest NVMe drive on the planet, so why take a chance?

Trying to decide what it's worth to get the machine fully assembled from Lenovo and not risk getting stuck between two companies blaming each other if something doesn't work.

So... I just want to know what make and model that's included if you buy the 512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe from Lenovo, please.

I believe the OEM version is the Samsung SM951 NVMe SSD.  The 950 Pro is newer tech.  You can find comparisons via Google.

The 950 is faster and is supposed to handle heat better.

I think there are enough people on this forum that you can feel safe with the Samsung 950 Pro.  I think the major problem the Skylake chipset has problems with is *memory,* not NVMe drives.  No other Samsung drive is as fast.

Thank you for the informative answer Phil. If the included drive would have been equivalent to the 950 Pro I would have prefered getting it directly from Lenovo despite the higher cost.

This is wonderful news, but I would call it too little too late.  <sigh>  Some of us struggled through some awful times and 100% of the valuable support we received was through other forum members.  It would have been nice had Lenovo been a bit more understanding.
