Show BIOS/boot on External when 4k laptop panel is dead on P51?

2021-02-02, 9:04 AM

My 4k panel has died on my P51.
There is a way to show the BIOS/boot screens on the HDMI attached external display, by changing the setting in the BIOS...
But how the hell do we change that when the laptop's own panel has died?

It'd be really useful if there was a hotkey that we could press to perhaps temporarily change the display to the external display, such that we could access the BIOS and make this change in the settings.
Or perhaps to change it from within windows?  Via Vantage.

I got Windows to use only using display 2, so it's all good once it's up and running.  But if i have any issues, meaning windows can't start, or need to reinstall, i'm screwed.

Any hidden tips?

Re:Show BIOS/boot on External when 4k laptop panel is dead on P51?

Hello topbanana,

Greetings

Since BIOS just works on the basic features/components, It can only be shown or access via the native/internal screen.
It can't extend to external display.

Avoid changing BIOS settings as it might ruin your current external display configuration. Likewise, do not reload BIOS defaults.

Hope this helps

With the lid closed all output will go to external monitor, including the BIOS. In Windows you can also select only to display on the second panel, again, with the lid closed internal display will be turned off. I have three P51 set up in this way. You just need an external keyboard attached to press F12.

Make sure that you select "Do Nothing" for "closing the lid" in the Power event options.

I think this answer is incorrect

Did you change the BIOS settings for the boot display though?

My P51 is attached and looked into the 'Workstation Dock' and turned on via the dock's power button.  But the BIOS doesn't show up.  Windows eventually appears on my external monitor plugged into one of the Dock's DisplayPort connectors.
I have a wired USB keyboard and mouse both plugged into the P51 directly.
I also have HDD and Admin passwords set, which are usually authenticated with fingerprint.  So i'm just pressing escape and typing my password in at the moment.

In device manager, the 4k panel isn't present, as expected i think. It is if i boot it with the lid open, and tell windows to use the 2nd display only.

How can i tell the BIOS to display itself on an external screen???
If i need to reinstall, etc, i'm buggered.

Wow! Did you use the laptop panel everyday or sparingly using an external monitor instead? I am wondering about the durability versus say a 1080p screen.
