Slow Bios Boot Time

Hello, Product:   p14s  21AK000QMZ
BIOS-Version:N3BET53W 1.31

since BIOS Update to "ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10/11 - 1.31"
my p14s stays for 90-100 seconds on Lenovo start Screen. Then it moves to Windows start.
Before this Bios update it was very fast als usual.
With this Update it stays sooooo long on Lenovo Screen and wait for ?? something.

I didn't change anything or install anything else. Still only doing this BIOS Update (and also all following updates as I ever do actualizing all with Lenovo commercional Vantage Tool)

Does anyone have a solution?

Hi timosuisse and welcome to community forums!

Could you provide a screenshot of the Processes tab and the Performance tab under the task manager? Include the OS build version of the machine.

Have you tried disabling programs on the startup?
Settings --> Apps --> Startup --> Turn off unnecessary programs running on the startup.

Re:Slow Bios Boot Time

Hello,

the two pictures show the phases of the startup
Picture "1_BIOS.jpg" shows the startup phase in the BIOS
Picture "2_Windows.jpg" shows the startup phase of Windows.
In picture 1 the start phase is still in the BIOS. This phase takes about 2 minutes.
The phase in picture 2 lasts only 10 seconds. With your suggestion to shorten Autostart I would shorten the phase in picture 2 (Windows Startup).
But this is not the problem.
The problem here is that Lenovo's startup phase in the BIOS is very slow. The device waits for something in the BIOS before it gets to the harddisk and starts Windows.

Re:Slow Bios Boot Time

Here are the things to try:

Load the BIOS default settings by pressing the F9 key then press the F10 key to save it.
Here is how to boot to the BIOS: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-yoga-7th-gen-type-21cd-21ce/21cd/21cd000jus/solutions/ht500222-recommended-ways-to-enter-bios-boot-menu-thinkpad-thinkcentre-thinkstation

Re:Slow Bios Boot Time

Hey there, I got my P14s Gen 3 (Intel) just about a week and now already experiencing that the BIOS POST boot time is insanely slow. I had turned off "Fast Boot" and make sure every boot (or reboot) will be started from fresh state. However for some reason, it seems the when the Lenovo logo is shown up with the message "Press enter key to interrupt", then it will stay in this screen for a very long time (20+ seconds) before moving into the OS bootloader stage. At that screen, keep pressing enter will also take very long time for the BIOS to response to the input.

EDIT: It seems that the boot time is not consistent, if the laptop being shutdown for a while and being powered on from stone cold, then it can be as fast as just few seconds, but however I didn't have a lot of information yet.

The spec of my laptop is i7-1260P with 16GB on-board memory + 32GB SODIMM (memtest overnight passed, and this same memory module being used on my X1E G3 for more than a year without a glitch, so unlikely the memory module), with Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 2TB SSD, using latest BIOS (1.31/1.11) with deactivated Secure Boot.

Re:Slow Bios Boot Time

Have you tried all the suggested steps earlier? How did it go?

Resetting BIOS to default doesn't work, I didn't try the reset option from the "Security" menu yet.

Not sure if related but I did run some intensive processing tasks (like 10 mins stress testing on the CPU) before that, since then every boot need 20+ seconds to get pass the BIOS splash screen.

At last I shut down the laptop completely and waited for an hour before booting it up again from cold fresh state, now everything seemed find and just need about 5 seconds to boot. However it really seems like a big concern as there are a lot of similar cases being reported everywhere...

Re:Slow Bios Boot Time

I have the same laptop, the same issue, however tried your solutions, but startuptime is still +20 seconds... is there any solution?

Re:Slow Bios Boot Time

yes the first provided solution worked very good. the boot is very fast now.

but you have to be very sure that you have written down the key for bitlocker first. you will find it on your microsoft 365 account if you safed it (recommended).

if you don't know the harddisk encryption-key after the clear action in bios, you will be prompted to enter the key at the first start. if you don't know this key you have to do a new installation.

so first check if you have a key and save it and write it down.

I just noticed there is a new BIOS release yesterday (1.34/1.14 2023-05-16), related to the fixes of BIOS POST hang when some memory module is installed.

Maybe can have a try and see if the situation improved?
