Some specific questions regarding the P70

2016-11-04, 11:01 AM

So I have my P70 coming on November 22nd.  Very excited, ordered it somewhat bare drive-wise because I am going to replace them with the 2tb NVME disks when they are available from samsung and the 2tb FireCuda spinners in the two sata slots, which are also not available  yet!  Arg.

Anyway, on to the questions:  I ordered with the M5000M, given that it's the highest end card you get get, does anyone know if it's wired to use x16 lanes?  If you use something like HWINFO or AIDA, does it show the card running at x8 or x16?  I ordered the E3-1505v5 processor which has 16 lanes wired to the CPU so I am wondering if they use them all.

Which leads me to my second question.  I have actually read on other forums of people getting 5GB/s sequential transfer on two 950 Pro NVME SSD's using the provided M.2 slots on the P70.  Well I am not sure about the P70 chipset but all modern non x99 chipsets give you essentially DMI 2 or 3 (depending on the version) which is roughly 3.2 GB/second for all other PCIE traffic.  If people are really getting that kind of speed I am thinking they only used x8 for the GPU and then used x4+x4 for the pcie ssd slots which I think would be great given the performance of the quadro it doesn't need x16 I don't think and personally I don't buy that they are using x8 for the gpu just because mxm is wired for x16 typically.

Are there options in the bios to change the lanes used by the mxm adapter?

And then lastly, if anyone has a raid 0 config with two super high performance nvme ssd's in the M.2 Slot what results do you get?

Thank you!  Looking so forward to being a member of the club!

You might want rethink your decision about the use of the Samsung 950/960 Pro NVMe drives in the P70 based on this KB:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Can-I-add-a-Samsung-950-Pro-NVMe-SSD-to-my-P50-ThinkPad/ta-p/3459369

With regard to the addition of SATA3 HDD drives, keep in mind that these cannot exceed 7mm in depth to fit into the 2.5"bays. You will also need the ODD HDD adapter for the 2nd SATA HDD as well as to order two Mobile Storage Kits to properly install the 2.5" drives into their respective bays.

There are no BIOS configuration setting to increase the lanes on the MXM GPU. Also, the M5000M is a bit scaled down for the P70 due to thermal constraints.

I did see an experiment of two SM961 NVMe drives in a P70 RAID 0 configuration. The result was consistent blue screens because of channel overruns. Use in a RAID 1 configuration were fine. I currently use 2 SM951 SSDs in RAID 1 my P70.

YMMV

Thanks, I am going to chance it simply because there are no better options at the moment, I'll make sure to turn off encryption until I can get my hands on the 2tb 960s.  The drive they offer is a decent SM961 or SM951, so the 960 will basically be the same thing they offer now.  I could not even get 1tb drives with my order unfortunately.

"960 will basically be the same thing they offer now..."

The SM951 is definitely not the same as the Pro 950 or Pro 960 SSD's which use different drivers supplied by Samsung.

Read the KB before you commit to this configuration. You may be contending in the future with significant incompatiblity issues.
