Stuck at .78 GHz

2018-03-01, 19:23 PM

I have a W550s.  I've been running with it for a while, and everything has been great.  Last week, I realized that I needed to install the Lenovo drivers for it.  I downloaded and installed the Lenovo Vantage app.  it went through a complete install process, several reboots, some bios updates.  Everything seemed to be ok, but I noticed it was running much slower.  It felt that way and I checked the windows task manager.  Taskman reported that my laptop was running at .78 GHz.  I am plugging in and on AC power.  Somewhere I have to be able to tell the system that it should not be running at .78 GHz, but at full speed while being plugged in.  I have walked through out the power settings in the control panel and am not able to find what I am looking for.  Where do I go and set the speed for my system when plugged in, because this auto stuff isn't working?

Thanks,

Wally

Are you running anything else besides task manager?  The CPU will slow down when it is lightly used.

I'm running several of these applications and those applications use a lot of cpu.  I do development, and I am constantly running Visual Studio, doing debugging, and other high cpu utilization.  I run several simulators on my system.  This .78 GHz limit is killing my productivity.  I need to find a solution, and google hasn't been overly helpful.  :-/

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it could be related to Intel Turbo-Boost.  Sounds like it might have been disabled, either in BIOS setting or in some Power Manager setting?  BIOS -> Config -> CPU?

Here's an article bout Turbo-Boost, and how it can get enabled or disabled.  There's other stuff on the same subject out there as well.

Does CPUZ say you're using 4 threads? What shows when you "bench" test?

So, I went into the bios.  I made no changes.  Everything looked ok regarding the settings.  I shut down.  I started everything back.  I go to taskman, and get back that the CPU is running at various levels and the speed is jumping around as I would expect it to now.  Weird.

With something like this, I'll repost if I figure anything out.  Thanks.

I'm back.  At my office, one time, the laptop ran as expected.  Otherwise, the danged thing is consistantly running at .78 ghz.  This began with the installation of the lenovo drivers 2 weeks ago.  This is clearly some type of default setting that the driver installation over writes.  Is there documentation on how to set up a thinkpad optimally for when it is connected to power?

TIA

I'm using w540 - window 10 64 bit, all driver and bios update is newest

After update bios from newest of lenovo , my cpu has problem is :

in about 5 minture cycle , cpu  suddently  dump to maxium 29% (0.78 Ghz)  ( all process also dump to slow )

after 1-2 minture slow  . cpu restore to work normaly . and after 5 mins late, it throttled again ....

I very sad  about trobles  of my w540 . most of this is about cpu and power driver

in next time i will say goodbye with lenovo, and try to some workstation of Dell of HP

when it's stuck at the low clock speed, unplug the power supply and plug it right back in. see if it changes the clock speed. makes the occasional slow session on my w540 get better immediately

Still nothing. I'm thinking of just reformatting and starting over unless anyone has a suggestion. Thanks!
