ThinkPad P71 Upgrade?

2020-09-13, 17:52 PM

Hello,

I've noticed my CPU i7-7700HQ is limiting many of the task I perform with this workstation. I wanted to know if it's possible to completely upgrade the motherboard along with a new CPU that is compatible with this model (probably a Xeon) or if I should just simply buy a new laptop. Other hardware is fine is just the CPU that bottlenecks everything else.

Cpu Spec:

i7-7700HQ (6MB Cache, up to 3.80GHz)

Model:

P71 (type 20HK, 20HL) Laptop (Thinkpad) - Type 20HK

2017

It is generally a better idea to sell your old machine and buy a new one.  A motherboard that fits is limited to a 7th gen CPU and would be very expensive.  Intel made a big performance improvement with the 8th gen CPUs.  (the first such improvement since about 2014)
