ThinkPad W510 9-cell battery?

2010-02-15, 9:32 AM

I'm waiting for my new W510 to arraive!

While waiting I'm going to order a 9-cell battery for it, as it just ships with a 6-cell..

But I have a hard time figuring out which 9-cell that are compatible with these new W510 series?

I've got a PDF from Lenovo Norway where they list "40Y6797" as it's 9-cell battery, but my resellers claim the "51J0500" to be the one to go for?

Do they both fit?

It will fit a 510 but a SL510 not a W510.

From the Lenovo Australlian site:

I found this:

http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/notebooks/ThinkPad/W-Series/W510_datasheet.pdf

Which says that puppy will work in the W510.

My 510 just arrived.  It shipped with a 9 cell. It was an option when I ordered it.  See line below from my order confirmation:

45M4816  SBB 9CELLLI-ION BATTERY

IBM and Lenovo have two part number schemes.

One for the original part and one for a part used as a replacement FRU (Field Replaceable Unit).

Not sure which one this falls into.

For clarification, IBM & Lenovo use the same system.

There are two numbers for each part ...no matter if it's a part that came on your computer, or a replacement part.

1) FRU Number:  (Field Replaceable Unit) not to be confused with the actual part number.

2) PART Number: (The actual part number) These are two different numbers.

This is a confusing system that has been in place for years. I've used ThinkPads for over a decade and I still have problems finding the right part number in many cases. In many cases even Lenovo employees cannot help find the proper part number which is the only number they use for ordering.

FRU numbers are easy to find.

Here is the link to lookup FRU numbers, you must have your model type and serial number off the label on the bottom of your computer.

Hi RamGuy459

40Y6797 = ThinkPad Battery 41++ (9 cell) link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-67501.html

51J0500 = ThinkPad Battrey 25+ (9 cell) link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-73702.html

Scroll down to Hardware Compatibility table

the 40Y6797 does not list W510

the 51J0500 does list the W510

Maybe it's different here in Canada, but all the W510 configs included a 9-cell when I was ordering.

It's the same here in the USA. All W510's come with the 9 cell battery. It's because this computer draws a lot of power, so in an effort to return the best possible battery run times, Lenovo has chosen the 9 cell.

Even the Elite T510 with dedicated graphics falls into this same category. I have one that just arrived. Now I'm waiting for the 6 cell battery I ordered separately to arrive. I find the 9 cell just too bulky as it protrudes too far out of the back of the computer, which makes it too tight of a fit in my top loading computer case. Also it's too heavy that way, as I carry it everyday. Being plugged in 95% of the time, battery life is not important to me.
