Re: ThinkPad Xeon P70 128GB RAM

2019-07-31, 21:45 PM

Hi

I really wish you luck getting any reply from Lenovo on this subject. One thing I have learned from them is that when it comes to advertise new products they do everything possible and help you on any way but once you have purchased from them and you try to get any technical support they are really really bad.

I raised a topic a few months ago regarding this ram limitation on the P51 which I owned and never received a response from them, you get instead good feedback from many users on this forum but very hard to get an official response from a representative of lenovo on these technical matters.

I myself don't see why it shouldn't be possible to allow P50 and P51 machines to recognise and use more than 64GB ram, clearly shows that the limitation is locked on the CPU itself because as you demonstrated when installing the 128GB ram the OS can see that amount of ram but it can not use more than 64GB due is been locked by the CPU, Intel should really consider not only make this validation they talked about a few months ago on the new releasef 9gen cpu but also make it available on previous gen like the 8, 7 or even 6gen.

Let's hope if making a lot of noise on this subject from many customers who owned P50 and P51 machines at some point someone from Lenovo would finally gives us an answer.

I'm certain that a BIOS update would allow this to happen to have and use up to 128GB on the P50 and P51 but unfortunately it is up to Lenovo for this to happen, I'm considering to buy my next machine from Dell or HP where you seem to have a much better technical support.

Re: ThinkPad Xeon P70 128GB RAM

It IS all about the validation of the increased memory in the channel by Intel. The 128GB memory support in the P52/P72 was negotiated with Intel by Lenovo most likely because of the delay on the new 9th generation of CPUs. Other PC vendors also negotiated with Intel with for their 8th generation CPU systems. Validation and certification of a new memory configuration for the older CPUs  is certainly not without expense. That said, there was, in the recent past, a significant user demand for the P70/P71 to allow for RAID 0/1 SSD configurability regardless of whether the systems had originally been ordered with that capability. Eventually a BIOS release was created and released which enabled that functionality post sales. So, it's not beyond possibility that if enough users of the P70/P71/P50/P51 request the additional support that it might just get implemented.

YMMV

Re: ThinkPad Xeon P70 128GB RAM

As mentioned by harrisb it all depends on whether Lenovo has the willingness to perform this BIOS update so P series previous generation like the P50 and P51 can see and use mora than 64GB, it is like he said with the RAID configuration when the P51 was initially launched back on 2017 many people were talking about that this was only possible at the factory when selecting the RAID configuration on the Lenovo website but in the end (and this was confirmed I remember well by a Lenovo representative) where he mentioned that Lenovo technical team was in the process of testing a BIOS update which will enable RAID mode on the P51.

But, again this is down to whether Lenovo they want to do it or not, so the more users raise your voices on this matter the better and most likely they may consider lifting the RAM limitation on the P50 and P51.

We shall wait and see.

Hi

I found this link https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/platform-memory/platform-memory.html on intel website regarding the validation and results of different types of ram for the different processors, interesting to see that on the part that says: Client > Mobile > Coffee Lake DDR4 SoDDIM non-ECC on the page that shows next it doesn’t show the Samsung 32GB modules as certified but we already know they are compatible with current 8th generation CPU, it may be the case this document is out of date but seeing this it makes think that this validation process is easy  to carry out.

Lenovo, any word on this?

I wish you luck, they for sure will come back to you quoting that as the specs on the P70 the system only supports up to 64GB RAM, the only way as already mentioned by one of the members on this forum will be to gather some support for lots of owners of these models or make lot of noise on this part so Lenovo will take this on board, release a BIOS update and will allow the utilization of 128GB RAM on the P50, P70, P51 and P71.

The Lenovo BIOS already picks up the memory. The BIOS screen and built-in diagnostics already see 128GB.   It seems to me that this effort should be directed toward Intel and I would guess that Intel's interest in doing work to make 2 and 3-year-old CPUs more competitive with current ones would be something like zero.

This is why intel is losing ground with AMD with the way they are doing things lately. They certainly can do this by updating the microcode of the 6 and 7 generation CPU.
