Thinkapd W541 doesn't recognize Samsung M.2 2242 SSD

2021-09-30, 14:01 PM

I recently bough a used Thinkpad W541 and decided to use the WWAN slot to fit an M.2 SSD, but with all the excitement I failed to understand that M.2 2242 can come with different keys.

I bought the Samsung PM991 NVMe MZ-ALQ5120 SSD M.2 2242 because it was an M.2 2242 and from the pictures the single sided key would fit in my WWAN slot and indeed it fits but doesn't show up in the Bios, Ubunty Gparted disks tool or in Windows 10 disk tool.

My Bios is configured with Secure boot disabled and Legacy boot support enabled but with priority to boot from UEFI.

Is there any thing I can do or I just really bough the wrong M.2 2242 SSD?

According to ThinkPad W541.indd this model accepts an M.2 SSD in the WWAN slot. However this format predates NVMe. Instead it uses the previous SATA interface.

M.2 SSDs come in both SATA and NVMe interface variants. The Samsung you have appears to be an NVMe. It's not compatible with SATA.

Thanks for the link and info. The Ebay seller listed it as being SATA, therefore I bough it with confidence that would work on my Thinkpad, because it was also an M.2 format 2242 that matched my slot entry and available space. Need to find the spec sheet from Samsung for the SSD drive.
