Thinkpad P1 Gen2 stuck in Bootloop: "Configuration changed - Restart the system"

2019-11-21, 2:15 AM

Hi all,

After changing the Secure Boot settings in the BIOS (Disable Secure Boot, and put it in Setup Mode, Inserting Keys via Keytool, According to the description of this article: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Sakaki%27s_EFI_Install_Guide/Configuring_Secure_Boot#Method_3:_Inserting_Keys_via_Keytool ) for enable Secure Boot for Linux.

The laptop now bootloops right after the Lenovo logo with the folowing message displayed for barely a second: "Configuration changed - Restart the system"...
Same situation as https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-X1-Extreme-stuck-in-Bootloop-quot-Configuration-changed/td-p/4321224
It's absolutely impossible to get to the BIOS, I can get to the boot menu via the F12 Key but any option I choose (BIOS, Diagnostics...) gets immediately the same message and it restarts.

My BIOS version is 1.27. P1 Gen 2 (Type: 20QTS00X00)
I got the laptop two weeks ago, my first ThinkPad. I am disappointed with the ThinkPad right now.

Please help me figure this out!

Hi! I can't explain the origin of that issue. But what you can do to solve this, is just disconnect the little round battery off the motherboard for one or two minutes then reconnect it, that will reset the bios. Make sure to remove the main battery and press the power button for a few seconds beforehand in order to get rid of all power that might be remaining on the machine.

Let us know how things played out.

@La_Marmotte Thanks for replay.
I have already tried remove the motherboard battery and the main battery. after I do this, the error message is "Check Date and Time settings" and "Configuration changed - Restart the system". still stucked in Bootloop.

Bummer, if this trick doesn't work for you, I can't see what else you could do aside from shipping it back to have it fixed. Removing motherboard battery generally is the ultimate solution for any pc that won't start.

Did you try Digital Download Recovery Service to create recovery USB drive: https://windowsloop.com/create-lenovo-usb-recovery/

I hope you end up working it out.

1) Try to remove the internal SSD and then go into BIOS settings.

2) Try to change the RAM capacity - this may trigger NVRAM reset

3) The Lenovo Recovery disk may help if your Windows OS is broken and you want to restore the factory image. You need to be able to boot the machine in order to use it. It won't help in this case where it sounds like you have something wrong with the NVRAM (which is essentially settings stored in the flash chip on the motherboard).

@ThinkpadIL Thank you
I have tried these, remove the SSD, change the RAM capacity.
and I can't boot from the recovery USB.

@La_Marmotte
You are right, I have already sent it back for repair.

I hope the official ThinkPad engineers can see this issue and fix it in future BIOS updates.

Ok then. Will you tell us what the repair team will have done to fix your laptop when you get it back. The solution will be worth sharing for anyone else who would face the same case as yours. I'm very curious to know too.

Same problem with the same steps to reproduce still exists in the new T14 model with BIOS version 1.05

Please, advise.
