Thinkpad P50 HDMI & Thunderbolt not working

2020-08-22, 7:33 AM

Hi there,

I recently got a thinkpad p50 from my friend, and I replaced its SSDs and got a fresh installation of Windows 10. Have been using it with an external monitor happily via mini DP for a few days.

Then I got a new monitor, and realized that the HDMI port does not work. I was looking for answers on this forum and was wondering if this is related to the Thunderbolt firmware bug that is affecting other thinkpad models (I mean this one: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sk/en/solutions/ht508988, though p50 is technically not on that list)?

I also read the 30-page discussion on a similar issue here (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Lenovo-P50-HDMI-not-working/m-p/2264525#M55880), and the only "solution" I got out of that discussion is to update the Intel Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt Firmware, which I was unable to. Basically, despite having installed all the latest drivers, the Thunderbolt software was not able to detect the Thunderbolt controller (regardless of whether I plug-in a HDMI cable connected to a monitor, or a different Thunderbolt HDMI & DP adapter, no Thunderbolt controllers can be found).

Any thoughts on how do I get the HDMI to work? Or is it gone forever and ever?

Hello,

Unfortunately, I do not currently have my P50 near me to check this, but have you looked around in the BIOS (UEFI) firmware settings to see if the Thunderbolt port is enabled?

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I just double checked the BIOS settings, and Thunderbolt is already enabled under "Security" -> "I/O ports access". Is there another Thunderbolt-related BIOS setting that I should be aware of?

Here are some screenshots that I took:

The Thunderbolt software cannot find the controller at all, even when I have a Thunderbolt to HDMI & DP adapter plugged in.

And when I run the FwUpdateTool.exe which I got from n1etf08w.exe downloaded from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds112986/, it complains about "No active Thunderbolt controller found in the system".

Hi,

I recently had this issue as well.

I've had my Thinking X1 for a few years but the HDMI and Thunderbolt ports have just stopped working suddenly.

When I try to apply the Critical Update from here https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/ht508988 `fwupdmgr` just tells me

$ fwupdmgr install b067bd771ef88fb1da0ed3260777c2b0940ad6a844a166b8e8ebebfa02f76be1-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1Carbon5th-Thunderbolt-Firmware-N1MTF28W-Secured.cab

Decompressing…           [***************************************]

No supported devices found

Yesterday I opened a support ticket with Lenovo so we'll see what they say.

Perhaps you could do the same too?

To do this,

  • click the link I included above,
  • enter the serial number of your machine in the box next to the orange exclamation icon,
    • You can find your serial number in the BIOS screens at startup or with `sudo dmidecode |grep -i serial` on Linux (it's the 7 letter code). I'm not sure how to do it on Windows.
  • press the enter key (don't click the blue button next to the box!),
  • click "Product Home" in the bar on the left,
  • click the blue "Need Help?" button on the right,
  • click "RECOMMENDED: Submit a Service Request",
  • click the blue "Visit eService Ticketing online" button in the middle,
  • follow the support process through from here either signing in or registering as applicable to you.

Did you hear back from Lenovo after opening a ticket? I felt like they simply do not care.

Thinkpad P50 HDMI & Thunderbolt not working

To some extent I don't care for Thunderbolt anyways, but not being able to use the HDMI is really disappointing as I cannot use a 2nd external monitor.

Hi,

They got in touch to tell me that my warranty had expired but they could take it to their repair centre for a fee. I asked for a call to discuss my options and have followed up many times with them but am yet to hear anything.

I've managed to fix my P50's Thunderbolt issues.

Firstly I disabled the Windows Firewall and turned off Bitdefender.  Then I uninstalled the Thunderbolt Driver and via the Device Manager I also uninstalled the 'Intel Engine Management Interface'.

Then I installed the Thunderbolt Software and then Firmware and all now works.
