Thinkpad P52 HDD LED indicator always ON

2019-09-25, 7:41 AM

Hi,

On my Lenovo Thinpad P52 running windows 10 the HDD LED indicator is always ON (almost never blink).

I noticed that on all windows 10 version (and also in debugging mode without any services in msconfig)

The LED blink normally during boot and for 1 or 2 minutes after the windows login. And after that, it never blink and remain always on (except during sleep)

I don't noticed any I/O with task mananger and the little utility LED CONTROL show no disk access.

I have 3 SSD (2 nvme, one intel build in by lenovo and one samsung 950 pro with samsung drivers) and 1 2,5" SATA (samsung)

both windows and samsung drivers tested with same reslut.

Drivers, BIOS and OS fully updated (with Lenovo Vantage)

Thnaks if you notice the same or/and have a solution.

Hi diegofromparis.

Welcome to the Community Forums!

We recommend turning off the "USB always on" option in available in the BIOS.

Let us know if this helps out.

Regards.

Hi,

Done this in bios, but don't work. The HDD led is still always on.

Tried to update all drivers and windows is up to date. Still the problem.

Has there been no replies yet? After all, the user who originally posted message did not have this issue solved.

Hello,

This likely indicates no one else has experienced the same (or a similar) issue.

Thanks for replying Aryeh. I understand that maybe nobody else other than me and OP are experiencing this. Changing the USB Always On feature does not correct the issue.

Still, can we get some assistance on the subject? Or will Lenovo leave us as is because we are statistical insignificant?

Hola Jack.

Since our OP and myself are still experiencing this issue, could you provide some additional assistance? Maybe point us in the right direction?

Re:Thinkpad P52 HDD LED indicator always ON

Well, I want to add my whole system information here to help out, and follow OP's lead:

I have a P52 with 16GB RAM, Quadro P3200 video, 500GB SATA HDD, with the following system/BIOS info as of right now:

  • Model Number: 20M9CTO1WW
  • Current BIOS: N2CET54W 1.37 (can't say if its BIOS related)

Bought it with the 500GB SATA drive but quickly transferred all my Data to a Samsung 950PRO 512mb NVMe unit, and removed the SATA HDD. Afterwards, I just transferred everything to a brand new 970PRO (same capacity) and restored the system from zero, and added all software from there.

I wanted to add that I did keep both my 970PRO and 950PRO in the P52, with separate Win10 PRO 64-bit OS installed.

Recently, I decided to switch over to the 950PRO by selecting it from the Boot Menu (F12) and noticed that the HDD light is blinking as it normally should (very small blips but a lot when heavy HDD is detected), instead of just a steady light.  In addition, I checked and have the same NVIDIA drivers installed on both OS instances (26.21.14.3630 - 05Sep2019). Other than that, I cannot find any additional differences. Same Avast Anti-virus, same Samsung Magician software, Samsung SSD driver 3.1.0.1901 (17Jan2019).

Just as a test, I updated the Lenovo Vantage software from the Microsoft Store, and accordingly updated ALL obsolete drivers (hadn't used the 950PRO OS since I switched in late 2018). As observed, normal HDD LED indicator activity is being observed.

Nothing more to add, for now.
