Thinkpad P52 and ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock - Type 40AF

2020-09-04, 16:59 PM
Hello! Your P52 needs a 170W adapter whereas the hybrid USB-C dock can only deliver max 90W output if I remember correctly, and USB-C charging is 100W max as well. Your dock is not able to charge your laptop. I have a P70 / P51 / P1 and the only one of them my TB3 dock, with a 170W adapter is able to charge, albeit slowly, is the P1. For the P70 I need its 230W adapter connected too and the P51 needs its 170W as well. Hope this helps. Cheers! Atli Jarl.

Unfortunately the ThinkPad P52 will not charge (at all) via USB-C. The only way to charge the P52 is through the dedicated power port.

USB-C supports a maximum of 100W, while the mobile workstations usually require more power. The P52 ships with a 170W power supply. This does not affect the docking station in any other way, so everything else will work just fine. It just will not charge the P52.

There are two things you can do:

You will need to connect the power connection in addition to the USB-C cable of the docking station.

or

You will need to use the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock. This was designed for the P series computers. This will allow you to have a single cable connection between the dock and the computer. (Which is actually a composite cable that includes both a power and tb3 connector.)

I have been using a P52 for over two years now. Almost two years I used the afformentioned Workstation dock, but I am not really satisfied with it. I have two, and our workplace has several more. And most of the users have different kinds of problems with it. I currently use the two cable solution I described above. Both at work and at home.
