Re: Thinkpad P52 / p72 with 128GB RAM

Hi there,

Just want to catch up again regarding the memory upgrade. Have you been able to get the 32GB SODIMM work on your thinkpad p52?

Thanks

Tina

Tina, No....I could not get it to work beyond 64GB Ram....I returned the unit and am awaiting the newly ordered 128GB ram which is now available on the USA configurable options.

In a 128GB configuration, could you please advise if 2x32GB DIMMs must be Non-ECC (while the other 2x32GB are/can be ECC) OR ALL of the 4 DIMMs (4x32GB) are.can be fully supported/enabled with ECC?

For this system, and to my understanding, anything above 64GB must be non-ECC (hence, limitation by Intel certification).

Mixing ECC and non-ECC "works", but such config is not best practice and will not operate optimally.

I'm in the process of ordering a maxed-out P72. This info has an impact on whether, or not, I go for 128GB.

Thanking your feedback.

FYI, to be more precise, the "16GB DIMMs" refer to 16GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs based on 8Gbit DDR3 that is uncommon. The 32GB DIMMs of course refers to 32GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs based on the new 16Gbit DDR4.

What exactly are these "slight changes"?  So does this mean that only 32gb ram modules bought from Lenovo will work properly?  That's what it sounds like.

They are to support the new 16Gbit DDR4 chips.

Don't understand your reply.  This thread is about 128gb ram which obviously cannot be achieved with 16gb chips.  This guy Andy is saying that 4 32gb chips work but he says they had to alter them.

I mean 16Gbit chips, not 16GB DIMMs.

Hi

I ended up returning the So Dimm and laptop to lenovo and bought the laptop again with 128GB pre-installed since it would not recognize anything (even their correct ram) beyond 64GB. I'm pretty sure it was a bios issue. Zero useful help from lenovo tech support or sales reps.

So was essier to just do the above for me.

I notice that Lenovo offers a 64gb option with only 2 32gb modules,  presumably so that you could upgrade to more later.  So does that mean the memory controller on these models have these "slight changes" in preparation for this upgrade or what?  Strange that nobody seems to know.  Also, unless I'm mistaken Samsung and others are now making 64gb single modules,  so can you use 4 of those if you have these "slight changes"?  Of course you are right it's easier to just order the max config from them initially, but with Lenovo ram isn't exactly cheap and can double the price of the machine.  But if you don't spring for it up front, can you ever make an upgrade work later?  It's ridiculous that Lenovo themselves can't or won't answer this question.  They state the max ram is 128gb but only from them up front because it has to be modified?  If that's the case just say so.
