Thinkpad P52 sound delay and input lag.

2018-10-23, 12:44 PM

Hi all! I'm an italian IT administrator just bought a Thinkpad P52 two weeks ago. My OS is Windows 10 v. 1803.

My audio have a significant delay in the time it takes for sound to come out of the speakers and headphones after it is initiated by the PC. This lag, once noticed, becomes incredibly annoying and can be a constant source of stress and irritation. The problem is especially noticeable when the sound card hasn’t been “warmed up” and a sound (such as that triggered by an alert) is played after some silence, in which case it can take almost a full second for the sound to be played. In case of youtube videos the audio starts after some seconds of delay of video but starts in sync with the video (so tremendly annoying!).

I Tried a lot of drivers, from suggested lenovo driver that I downloaded from support.lenovo to vanilla realtek R2.82 that fix the problem but suddenly crash and no audio is listen as long as I have to reinstall that driver (reboot doesn't fix the problem).

How can I fix that annoying problem? It can be an hardware problem? I can not stand that anymore.

I also noticed that pointer movement with one finger or scrolls with two fingers sometimes lag on input through touchpad while the CPU is in IDLE. In case of scrolling, if I scroll with one finger when I click in the vertical scrollbar there's no lag input. I was not with the battery, my laptop was charging when I had these behaviors.

Thanks for any help.

Also, I don't know why but my thinkpad p52 had a fresh BSOD with CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION by ntoskrnl.exe

Why is so unstable? I don't understand. From now I installed only realtek drivers, TPFC (Thinkpad Fan Controller), Docker and VSCode.

I also have the same "delayed sound" issue with my new ThinkPad P52, specifically with system sound *.WAV files.  The problem is easy to replicate by going into the Windows 10 Sound Settings, and clicking the "Test" button on any of the Windows *.WAV sound files that are associated with Program Events.  You will notice a 1-2 second delay before the sound is actually played.  If the "Test" button is pressed repeatedly to keep the sound card "awake", the delay goes away.

I utilize a financial software package that provides user feedback via Windows Program Event *.WAV Sounds.  This sound delay issue makes the feedback useless, and confusing.  From online research, this issue seems prevelant in Dell machines with Realtek sound drivers, and now appears to have propogated to new ThinkPads as well.

Can Lenovo please address this issue?  Perhaps it is a Driver setting related to a power-saving feature of the Realtek sound chip?

I also get the input lag on single finger movement and scrolling with my P52. I ended up sending mine in for repair and they replaced the touchpad, but of course it fixed nothing. It happens randomly whether I'm on battery or plugged in, charging or not. Really frustrating.

Here a screen of AUDIODG.exe crash without any reason. I see the Hotkey of the mic that turned on with on-screen advice and no sound. I tried to play a video and nothing. No sound at all.

I also notice that sometimes the thunderbolt drivers turn on with the classic sound of a connected device, icon appear in the system tray without any reason or connected device. What mean that?!

I'm facing the same issues on my P52, running with the latest BIOS version 1.14. While I somewhat don't mind the audio kicking in late, I absolutely can't stand the mouse pointer starting to lag.

Has anyone of you guys ever faced a BSoD with the "wdf01000.sys" module failing (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL)? Considering that the touchpad appears to connected through USB this /might/ (though I am clueless in that regard) be an additional symptom as well.

Re: Thinkpad P52 sound delay and input lag.

"Delayed Sound" issue resolved.  As follow-up to my earlier post regarding "delayed sound" on my ThinkPad P52 when playing system sound *.WAV files, my Lenovo Vantage software went through a series of software/driver updates earlier this week which appear to have resolved the "delayed sound" issue.  Device Manager reports my Realtek sound driver version as 6.0.1.8552.  I am not sure if an updated Realtek driver fixed the issue, or if another update through Lenovo Vantage was the fix.  Either way, my "sound delay" issues are now resolved.

Thank you Lenovo for addressing this issue.
