Thanks, that's valuable information.

Let's just hope Lenovo updates their Thunderbolt firmware/drivers anytime soon.

@hargock,
There was a thunderbolt fireware update (updated on 2016/2/24) in driver list, have you tried?

Yes, but that update is for P70 only, unfortunately. It does not work on the P50. So I was basically waiting that a similar update would have been released for the P50

An update to the Thunderbolt driver for P50 ThinkPads is under qualification. (Edit: and P70)

I will post again when it has been released.

Thank you,

Yes, I am running my P70 with two EIZO 4k display and the same dock station.

When I connected them via the displayport - they did not work properly.

When I connected one via the displayport adapter and one via the HDMI adapter they worked perfect. Additional I am running the p70 display to have three 4k displays

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

2017-01-14, 3:22 AM

I have (3) 3840 x 2160 4k Dell P2415Q monitors currently hooked up to my P70 M5000M system on a docking station running windows 10.  But it was a bit of a trick to get there.  I had to use the two DP connectors on the docking station and the HDMI connector on the laptop direct.  I then ultimately had to go into Control Panel>appearance and personalization>Display>Change Display Settings   and then for each monitor:  Advanced Display Settings>Display adapter Properties>List all modes  then I had to choose "3840 by 2160, true color (32 Bit), 29 Hertz" for two monitors (DP) and 30 Hertz for the third monitor (HDMI).  I believe this has to do with the maximum display bandwidth for Display Port which has a useable maximum bandwidth of 17.2 Gbps.  I believe you can hook up a maximum of 6 monitors on DP 1.2 but you cannot exceed 17.2 Gbps so the resolution and refresh rate or color depth would have to drop to stay withing the bandwidth limit.  Can't gaurantee this is all correct but I do have all three 4k monitors working.  I made no other changes to the drivers or bios settings.

Now I'm going to try to figure out how to do it with the hookups solely on the docking station.  This may do it:  StarTech.com DisplayPort to DisplayPort Multi Monitor Splitter - 3-Port MST Hub - DP 1.2 to 3x DP MST MSTDP123DP Hub MSTDP123DP but note that I tried an older one with the same part number and it did not work.  I believe my old one is an older version of DisplayPort versions but why the same part number?!

This will still only let you hook up (3) 4k monitors:

StarTech.com DisplayPort to DisplayPort Multi Monitor Splitter - 4-Port MST Hub - DP 1.2 to 4x DP MST Hub MSTDP124DP

because: "Q: Will the hub work with four 4K monitors?

A: No, while MST does support 4K, bandwidth limitations of DP 1.2 prevent the MST hub from supporting four 4K monitors simultaneously. Four monitors can be added, however, your resolution must be within the bandwidth capacity of DP 1.2. Please visit this production on the Startech website, for a detailed DP 1.2 bandwidth chart." which I have here:

Supported Resolution Configurations:

Screen 1 Resolution, Screen 2 Resolution, Screen 3 Resolution, Screen 4 Resolution, Total % of Bandwidth

1920x1080 @60hz (22%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)88%
1920x1200 @60hz (30%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)96%
3840x2160 @30hz (38%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)off82%
3840x2160 @30hz (38%)1920x1200 @30hz (30%)1920x1080 @60hz (22%)off90%

Unsupported resolution configurations:

Screen 1 Resolution, Screen 2 Resolution, Screen 3 Resolution, Screen 4 Resolution, Total % of Bandwidth
2560x1600 @60hz (38%)2560x1600 @60hz (38%)1920x1200 @60hz (30%)1920x1200 @60hz (30%)136%
3840x2160 @30hz (38%)2560x1600 @60hz (38%)1920x1200 @60hz (30%)1920x1200 @60hz (30%)136%
3840x2160 @30hz (38%)2560x1600 @60hz (38%)2560x1440 @60hz (35%)1920x1200 @60hz (30%)141%
3840x2160 @30hz (38%)3840x2160 @30hz (38%)3840x2160 @30hz (38%)off114%

Note that the above are unsupported with three 4k at 30 hz being 114% of bandwidth.  Dropping two of the three monitors to 29hz apparently gets you at or below 100% and therefore works.

More background here if you want to check capability of your specific Nvidia graphics card:  https://www.pny.com/File%20Library/Support/PNY%20Products/User%20Guides%20and%20Tutorials/Quadro/Quadro-and-NVS-Display-Resolution-Support.pdf

I wanted four 4k monitors, but still, three 4k monitors running off a laptop!

Good Luck!
