Thinkpad W500 with Intel Mini PCI express SSD

2011-12-12, 8:08 AM

Hey Guys:

as you all know the Thinkpad W500 has a mini PCI express slot empty for Intel Turbo Memory.

in my laptop this slot is empty and i did not have the Turbo Memory.

Now intel is shipping Mini PCI Express SSD cards with 40 GB and 80 GB capacities.

i was wondering if it's possible to install these SSD drives to my Thinkpad W500 and boot from the SSD drive and use the hard drive as a secondy drive for other data.

has anyone tried this? do you know if the bios support it?

The W500 doesn't support Mini PCI Express SSD drives (or mSATA).

Hi, I do have the very same question. Now after 2 years of you hard answer maybe a BIOS update did correct this missing functionality??

Especially because of the permamently reserved RAM by the Intel graphic card (512 MB!) even if it is not used, this possibilty to add a fast memory would be highly appreciated by a lot of W500 users!

Thank you for a quick reply

mSATA feature is implemented on the hardware level, the W500 and W510 mPCIe slot is missing the SATA feature, BIOS update won't help to fix that issue.

HUH? If it's implemented on the hardware level, why wouldn't a BIOS update fix up any problems?

The SATA data lines attached to the mPCIe slot were implented beginning with the *20 series: X220, T420, T520, W520. Your W500 (and the W510) don't have the physical electrical connections to support mSATA SSDs.
