Thinkpad W540 Trackpoint issue

2014-06-18, 0:46 AM

Hi.

I'm having some issues with my newly bought W540 thinkpad.

Each time Windows 8.1 starts up after a longer shutdown, the UltraNav trackpoint freezes.

The problem seems to affect the trackpoint only, i have no problem with the touchpad.

Loading the UEFI BIOS setup defaults seems to help, but i need to do it after every shutdown, which is

very frustrating. The problem doesn't occur when restarting windows.

Pleas help!

Hi Thinkblaze,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Track-point on your ThinkPad W540.

I think the issue might be with the driver, can you please provide us the driver version which is installed on your system.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Thinkpad W540 Trackpoint issue

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately i'm pretty sure it's not a driver issue.

I've tried the following drivers: 18.0.7.40,  17.0.12.68, and they didn't work at all.

I've tried a clean install and even used the recovery media, but i always get he same result.

It's the same for Windows 7 and well as for Windows 8 :(

Now things got even worse. After the last attempt of reinstalling drivers, my trackpad stopped working at all.

I'm pretty convinced it's  the mainboard, keyboard, trackpad or the synaptics firmware.

I guess i will have to resort to my on-site warranty, unless you can provide me with a synaptics trackpad firmware

compatible with my w540 model.

Hi Thinkblaze,

Thank you for the reply!

The driver version which you have mentioned is correct, & I think the firmware is not working as expected; this might be the cause for the hardware failure.

However we can check one more option and after that you can log the case for that.

Please uninstall the Synaptics driver from Control panel – program and feature option and restart the system, let windows install the default driver for that and check if the issue still persist.

And also check removing the cap of the Track-point and check if there is any dust inside that.

Click here for complete details on Track-point settings.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Thanks for the reply!

I've already tried all of the aforementioned solutions, unfortunately none of them seems to work :(

Could you provide me with a proper firware installation driver? I can't use the synreflash app.

Hi Thinkblaze,

Has you have updated the latest driver for touchpad and there is no other firmware for that, and this kind of issue would resolve after updating the driver, however I would suggest you to check with updating the BIOS for that.

You can also check with downloading the UltraNav driver from Synaptic web-page.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

Hope this helps.

With all due respect!

You're a support specialist and should know the difference between a firmware and a driver.

If i needed a driver i wouldn't have started this topic. Is it so hard to provide me with a proper firmware

for Synaptics touchpad? I paid your company almost $2000 for this computer.

I am sorry for the confusion caused while assisting the query. There is no firmware updated for Touchpad hence I suggested you to check with updating drivers.

However I also suggest you to check with downloading the Synaptic driver from the Synaptic web-link.

If the issue still persists after updating the driver, then I request you to visit nearby service center for further assistance.

Hope this helps.
