Thinkpad W540 trackpad replacement?

2018-10-02, 3:16 AM

As many people would agree, the W540's trackpad is... bad. As far as I know, There is not a way to replace the trackpad In the laptop. However, there are several sellers on aliexpress selling older style trackpads with "W540" as one of the listed models in the title. Can I replace the trackpad in the laptop with the older style trackpads?

Many replace the 540 touchpad with one from a t450/t450/w550.  It is an improvement.  Search the forum for something like "replace t440 touchpad".

Another alternative could be to buy a W541 palmrest with the new trackpad (works out of the box). Is probably more pricey, but you may get lucky in eBay or Amazon :smileywink:

If you find a solution, do let us know.  We are particularly interested in knowing the driver to use on the upgrade trackpad on a W540.  From experience, the W541 driver does not work with the upgrade to a real trackpad with 3 buttons.

Lenovo should have offered a deep discount (let us say the dealer price, to any person complaining or justifying the W540 touchpad abomination).

Does not work.....You need some special driver, and the W541 touchpad drivers on a W540 does not work. The W540 is a POS. Still have the W540, with a useless track pad. A $2,000 (CHF 2,000) useless kiddy surfing laptop.

I did waste money, time and effort with a Eathtek 3 button touchpad.  Could never get the correct driver fo the W540 and the Eathtek.  If someone managed to do it, any hint is welcome.

>> W541 palmrest with the new trackpad (works out of the box).<<

May I ask if this is from actual experience, or an educated guess?  AFAIK, there is no palm rest.  The trackpad in the W540 was especially selected and separate from the palmrest.  It is NOT integral.  Must have been a Jony Ive design.

Actual experience, the only difference between the W540 and W541 is the trackpad.  I rebuilt a partially destroyed W541 using a mix of components of both a W540 and W541, the palmrest of the former and the trackpad of the latter.

Sometimes you can get a palmrest with the trackpad included, (see this auction as example, I have no affiliation with the seller!)

I have replaced the trackpads of all the xx40 units I own (T431s, 2x T440s, T440p, X240, L540). Is not that difficult from the hardware side, but software side it can get a PITA job if you use Win10, since by default it sets the drivers back to the xx40 models, so be aware.

This is not an issue at all with Linux.

Re: Thinkpad W540 trackpad replacement?

Thanks... I did follow from the forum on getting the replace 3 button trackpad to work (I do miss the lower buttons):

To add (3button.reg with tested driver 19.0.12.61 = https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds103454 gggr05ww.exe) to the:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SynTP\Parameters]
"ExtraCapabilities7Add"=dword:00010000
"ExtraCapabilities7Mask"=dword:ffffffff

The T430s has the correct configuration of a REAL WORKSTATION....

Now at least my W540 is 1/4 on the way to be a workstation.  Still needs theHD light, proper keyboard active key lights, WiFi hard switch, and properly funtioning F-Keys....  properly colored USB 3.0 sockets AND finger indent on the SD slot...  :(

You mean the old style light? I'm not aware of a mod like that, but the internet can be vast source of knowledge ;-)  The backlit keyboard should not be very expensive and easily available. What do you mean with properly functioning F-keys? Is your current KB defective?

I think the blue USB 3.0 was dropped by all manufacturers, if I recall correctly it was to identify USB 3.0 from USB 2.0 ports, but since no notebook has the old USB then the point of having a different color is moot.

With finger indent on the SD slot I assume you mean the fingerprint reader. For this you need to buy a palmrest that has a FP reader.

Enjoy your W540/1
