Thinkpad W541 Adding 1TB SSD to ODD Bay, won't boot

2015-07-30, 23:29 PM

Hi,

I'm only partially computer literate, so please bear with me.

The laptop (thinkpad w541) came with two 500 GB SSDs, one in center next to ram, and one in the ODD bay. I think they usually dont come with the SSD in the ODD bay, but it seems my boss made a custom order.

I am trying to replace the ODD bay one with a 1tb SSD. I've put the 1tb SSD in and it wont boot. It says it has a pxe-m0f check cable connection error.

The Lenovo phone support was not very helpful. I'm not sure they understood the issue either. I needed things explained a little more and in their frustration they told me to just go to the nearest service shop (1 hr away). Having spent about 3 hours on the phone with them today, spending another 3 hours out of my work day plus gas does not sound appealing.

It says at the beginning there is a RAID failure. Do I need to re-image the new 1tb SSD to be RAID like the existing SSDs? I have no idea how to do that.

Is it something else entirely?

Anyone else had this issue?

I really appreciate the help.

I guess I should add that this is the first time booting it up. After spending all day trying to get it to boot with the replacement 1tb SSD, I just put back the 500gb SSD it came with to make sure it can finish booting up. It does boot with the two original 500 gb SSDs. It's only when I add the new SSD that I get a RAID volumes failure.

Info for the failure:

ID:0

NAME: OEMRAID0

LEVEL: RAID0(Stripe)

Strip: 16KB

SIZE:953.9GB

STATUS: Failed

BOOTABLE: No

It lists the two physical devices as the Samsung ssd that came with the computer and the HGST ssd that I am trying to a

SAMSUNG

ID: 0

TYPE/STATUS (VOL ID): Member Disk (0)

HGST

ID:5

TYPE/STATUS (VOL ID): Non-RAID Disk

Looks like your system is configured for RAID 0. You'll need to turn that off first.

You also won't be able to use one of the two 500GB SSDs by itself without first formatting it back to a non-RAID drive.
