Thninkpad p50 16 GB ram upgrade to 32GB

2018-01-19, 0:48 AM

Hello

I have a lenovo thinkpad p50 with a 16GB DDR4-2133MHz SODIMM, I want to upgrade my RAM to 32GB.

I found Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM as an option to buy. will the 2400 be compatible with 2133 or do they need to be the same number o work together? Also should I put the new RAM chip in the dual slot with the existing one or on the other side of the laptop?

Most DIMMs will work, but those without Lenovo's FRU numbers on them are not guaranteed.  It's best to check the seller's return policy.  The speed isn't an issue, but it won't run faster than the bus speed, which is the speed of the other stick.  The slots are configured dynamically, so put it whenever it is easiest to access.

I believe you probably have 1x16GB factory installed in one (identified as #3) of the two memory bays that are located under the keyboard.  Ideally a second 1x16GB that matches your current memory stick in speed and timings should be used if you want to optimally double your memory, and ideally it should be installed in the second memory bay (identified as #1) also located under the keyboard.

By "optimal" performance I'm referring to "dual-channel mode" which purports to provide something like 10-15% improved performance over what's referred to as "single-channel mode".  Two memory sticks will run in "dual-channel mode" if (a) they are matched in terms of speed and timings, and (b) if they are installed in either of the two "matched pairs" of memory bays (i.e. either in #3 and #1, or in #4 and #2). Installing from one to four mismatched memory sticks or in the four memory bays in any other way will result in somewhat less-than-optimal "single-channel mode".  But it WILL work, no matter how you install the memory.

Your P50 has four memory bays, which are arranged in two "matched pairs":  (a) #3 and #1 under the keyboard where they can are more difficult to get to and can only be accessed by first removing the keyboard, and (b) #4 and #2 which are in the much easier to get to immediately accessible location on the underside of the laptop available immediately simply by removing the plastic cover on the bottom of the laptop.

If you install speed-mismatched memory sticks, the BIOS will slow down the performance of the faster memory to be equal to the speed of the slower memory.  But it WILL work, no matter what the speed of the individual sticks is.

So, ideally, if you want to install a second 1x16GB and since you already have your factory DDR4-2133 1x16GB under the keyboard in #3, your theoretically best "dual-channel mode" results will be if you buy another DDR4-2133 memory with the same timings as your existing memory, and install it in the currently open "matched pair" memory bay #1 under the keyboard.  But you will have to remove the keyboard in order to get to those memory bays.

But you also can go with a 1x16GB DDR4-2400 memory stick and install it in either of the easy-to-get-to laptop underside memory bays (#4 or #2) which (a) the BIOS will simply slow down to your slower DDR4-2133 speed, and (b) the BIOS will run the two memory sticks in "single-channel mode".  This eliminates the need to remove the keyboard, and in the real world you may never actually be able to notice the somewhat less-than-optimal performance difference.

Crucial DDR4-2133 RAM doesn't seem to be available anymore.

If I install 2 x 8GB, DDR4-2400 RAM in slots #2 and #4, Will they operate in dual channel mode? (regardless of #1/#3 RAM being 2133 MHz)

Yes, you get dual-channel performance from two memory cards when you have 2x matching memory in both slots of the proper pair of slots (either #1 and #3 under the keyboard, or #2 and #4 on the underside of the laptop).

And as far as different speed memory cards, the BIOS will simply slow down the potentially faster memory to run at the speed of the slowest memory you have, i.e. the 2133 memory from Lenovo.  I believe the 2400 memory cards will simply appear as if they were 2133 cards.

The BIOS in these laptop motherboards does not support over-clocking or XMP memory profiles etc., which theoretically could allow you to say truly get 2400 speed from 2400 memory (if all cards were 2400), rather than being limited to the Skylake spec 2133 speed.

That's what I thought.

Thank you.

Re: Thninkpad p50 16 GB ram upgrade to 32GB

Hi,

I am in the same situation as the OP.  I currently have the original 1x16gb in my P50 and want to upgrade my RAM to 32gb.  From my understanding, this can be accomplished by adding another 16gb stick to pair with the existing RAM underneath the keyboard.  Crucial's website scanned my PC and suggested their Crucial CT7977049 for my P50.  However, I noticed that the aforementioned Crucial RAM is non-ECC.  I am a novice when it comes to computers in general, but a few quick questions:

1.  Shouldn't that be a dealbreaker for me since the RAM I need have ECC??  I read somewhere that for my P50 with Xeon E3-1505M V5 processor, the RAM should have ECC or something along those lines.

2.  The Crucial RAM referenced specifies it is "Dual Ranked" - does that mean it is dual channel?

3.  Lastly, just to confirm, would there be an issue if I were to use this 16gb 2400 MHz RAM to pair with the existing 16gb 2133 MHz RAM?

Thanks in advance
