Three external monitors + own LCD in W540 with nVidia K2100 in ThinkPad Ultra Dock

2014-02-16, 20:29 PM
Hello guys!

We've been trying to set this up with no success.
We've uninstalled the complete graphics drivers, changed the graphics mode to advanced in the bios and then reinstalled... To no avail. We get blank screens.

What is the correct process to set this up.
We know for the three monitors the physical connections cannot be all the same.
We have:
Monitor 1: Display port.
Monitor 2: Display port.
Monitor 3: VGA Port.
Monitor 4: W540 internal 15.5 3K display.

We believe the hardware connections are ok, but the software enablement is unclear.
Your help is much appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

Hi Nicolas!

Is there a docking station involved? Probably there is( two DisplayPorts), but is it compatible model? What about monitors then? What  is the manufacturer and type? What about monitor selection (f7 without Fn button or Fn lock) have you selected appropriate selection (Clone, extended)?

You could refer  posting "W540 external display issue", I struggled with similar problems, an the main reason was the docking station and odd cable behavior and of course tha HP display of mine. It seems to me that this machine is very sensitieve when talking about cables and connections.

I would start adding one at time and repeating until I got a black screen. It is much more easier to find the reason that way.

Regards

Thanks Alpo,

Yes I made sure that the Dock is the right one.

I think there is an update for the dock's firmware....

Will the referenced post and report back!

Thanks again!

so instead of 4 monitors like Original Poster asked...

Im curious if you can run 3 monitors without the laptop's own LCD....

like Can you run 3 external monitors on just the W540 laptop (standard Windows 7 setup).

If so, what setup (can connect 2 to DVI for example on another on DisplayPort or HDMI?)?

Can you run 3 external monitors on just the UltraDock?

If so, what setup?

Thanks!

Ari

i think you need to run the Monitor off the laptop's own miniDP port to get it to work. Don't think the laptop can support vga port when you have 4 LCD connected.

Hey nechavarria,

Just curious if you got this to work.

I got my UltraDock today. and Noticed there isn't a page like this for the UltraDock:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76617

But wowie you could use 3+laptop display on the MiniDock^

I did see in the manual it says "For the ThinkPad UltraDock, if you connect two displays to the DisplayPort connector and the DVI connector, the DVI connector is inactive (same with HDMI as the 3rd monitor)"

Well that sucks? Whats so Ultra about the newer UltraDock lol. I'd rather have a MiniDock [option for the W540 with ability for 4 displays.

I guess the only options for >2 displays are daisy-chaining via laptops MiniDisplayPort (but I cant do since my Dell 2412M doesn't support daisy-chaining, but more $$$ models support like 2413M) or a DisplayPort Hub like so.

Is that true?

go into your bios, make sure your display mode is in advanced mode.

Jin,

The display mode is in advanced mode. In fact I can manage to get all three displays to work at the same time with the Thinkpad LCD, but after restart the two displays connected to the DPs are no longer recognized.

The docking port BIOS has also been updated to 2.17.

Thanks a lot!

The Lenovo support rep told me that it was not possible with the ultra dock and that I would have to buy different dock. This was not acceptable because the dock he said I needed does not have any USB 3.0 ports.

I updated the firmware on the Ultra dock first! This Hit F12 during the boot up and enter the BIOS. Under the display section, change the setting to "Advanced" mode. Once the computer boots up it will update the dock drivers and ask to reboot. once the system came booted I was able to configure 3 displays + the laptop LCD for a total of 4 separate displays!

I called back in to tech support and provided them with the information and I hope that they update their records to reflect that you can indeed run 3 monitors and the LCD on the Ultra dock and W540.

Hope this saves some frustration for other W540 users!
