Thunderbolt 3 Display Output 4k @60fps

2021-04-16, 15:18 PM

Im having an issue with my thinkpad p1 model number 20MDCTO1WW, Bios version N2EET51W 1.33. For some reason the 60fps option isnt available when the video output resolution is set to 3840x2160. im using a USB-C to HDMI cable connected to the thunderbolt 3 port which i assumed would support my use.

Re:Thunderbolt 3 Display Output 4k @60fps

Hello jwan3710,

Greetings

I checked the PSREF for 20MD machines, it supports external digital monitor via HDMI or Thunderbolt;
Up to 4 displays with 3 external monitors plus system LCD screen.
Max resolution: 5K@60Hz (Thunderbolt); 4K@60Hz (HDMI)

I went to the support site, there is BIOS version 1.35 released last month.
Kindly go to the said site, enter your serial number and see if the same 1.35 version is offered.
Also update the drivers and firmware thru the same support site.
Update us how it goes

Regards,

Hi jwan3710!

It is important to note that your USB-C to HDMI adapter is probably not using exploiting the thunderbolt capability, but having said that.

In my scenario:

P53+Xbox USB-C to HDMI adapter and 4k TV:

one of the USB-C ports gives the experience you describe, but the other USB-C port lists 4k60Hz fine.

Can you try the other USB-C port on your P1?

If that doesn´t change anything it might be time to look at a new adapter and/or HDMI cable.

If you seach fr 8k adapter s you are more likely to get a high speed one..

You need a TB3 cable. If it ain't got the lightening bolt TB3 symbol on it, it ain't gonna do no 4K.

It is quite rare using a USB-C to HDMI cable. As far as I know, current USB-C to HDMI cable can only support 4K 30Hz at most. It is recommended to use a TBT3 cable or HDMI-HDMI cable.

Re:Thunderbolt 3 Display Output 4k @60fps

To follow up,

I have a P1 Gen1 20ME model on BIOS 1.35 with P1000 GPU, I tried the Microsoft Surface USB-C to HDMI 2.0 dongle in both ports.

I tried in Hybrid and Discrete mode using the 452.66 Nvidia driver and the 452.96 release.

In all cases it offered me the 60Hz option, but selecting it only flickered the screen and it was back to 30Hz.

This is on a display that does 4k 60Hz on a P53 with the same dongle.

This leads me to believe there is something particular condition that prevents 60Hz with the P1 Gen 1.

EDIT: I restested with HDMI straight into the P1 and it switched to 60Hz, my P53 can also no longer do 4k60p Hz with the dongle on the same TV.

It might be a BIOS regression or Nvidia driver issue after all.

EDIT2: In order to rule out any cable issue I dug out a new HDMI cable and attached the P1 with the USB-C adapter to a Panasonic OLED TV and it

immediately connected 4k@60Hz, I then used the same adapter/cable on the SAMSUNG display, it still refused to change to 60Hz even if it was offered in the config panel.

\Very strange.

I went back and tested the Samsung TV again who refused to connect at 60Hz 4k.

I believe the problem is a combination of default EDID values and capabilities of the HDMI.

Fix:

Under Nvidia Control Panel on thre Change resolution tab I selected the "Use Nvidia Color settings" and put 30bit SDR color, 8bpc, full color range and RGB Output mode.

Then 60Hz came on by default.

For the HDMI input on the TV I also enabled "Input Signal Plus"

Please try this and let us know if it fixed your problem.

I confirm that I can do 4k 60Hz over USB-C with P53 and P50 laptops. I am sure it will also work on P1.
