Thunderbolt Firmware Update 17.0.0.18-N2COF23W fails to install on P72

2021-04-16, 1:09 AM

Tried several times to install the latest Thunderbolt Firmware Update 17.0.0.18-N2COF23W on a P72 and it fails to install.

Also downloaded and extracted the update package and tried to install manually but it simply seemed to finish the install with no error output however the NVM version is not updated to 62 as per the readme.

Hi cool,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Could be a faulty installer (exe) file, but try resetting the BIOS back to default settings and then try and run it again. You could also try to disable secure boot, then run the update and set Secure boot back to enabled.

BIOS reset
- Press the power button to completely shut down the unit.
- Press the F1 repeatedly on startup to enter BIOS.
- Navigate to the "Restart" tab
- Press "Load Default Settings"

- Find "Secure boot" in the "Security" section.

- Expand it and select "Disabled"

- Save & Exit changes or F10.

Regards

Unfortunately your suggestion did not work.  The update is still failing to install even after a EFI firmware reset and Secure Boot disabled (it was already disabled).

I can tell your this is another evil update of thunderbolt firmware from Lenovo. For both P52 and P72, no matter how careful you follow the update procedure, it always returns the error message :"can't find suitable bin file: I search the whole Lenovo community as well as calling the Lenovo engineer, no solution can be offered. But sarcastically, Lenovo keeps on posting this update for people download. I am sure nobody can successfully do the update.

Hi Morfinas,

You really bring luck to me. Thank you for you to show the successful updated screenshot.

You have set to no security mode. I then check my BIOS setup that  the  security  is set to  user authorization mode. Moreover the assist mode is enabled.

I then change the setting like yours. And the update is successful.

Thank you so much for your hint.

Unfortunately for me even after setting security level to "no security" the update still fails.

Some other things:

detect2008.exe  does detect the controller:

But FwUpdateCmd and fwdetectcmd1911 do not:

It appears that these utility commands that are provided by Intel are really low quality and Lenovo as a major customer of Intel should be putting pressure on Intel to release better quality utilities.

I also note that the information contained in the update n2cbe10w.txt file is incorrect, so Lenovo is also at fault:

DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED

  1.Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Thunderbolt Software.
  2.Execute Thunderbolt Software.exe
3.Left-Click thunderbolt icon located the the buttom-right corner.
  4.Select "Settings".
  5.Click Details.

This information is wrong.  First of all, if the Thunderbolt Software is installed than it will be in the Windows Start, so you can just press Win and type Thunder... and it will launch the Thunderbolt Software.  No need to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Thunderbolt Software.

Second, after Thunderbolt Software  is launched, you have to find the systray icon for it and right click it and select "About", so the info in 3. and 4. above is also wrong.

Come on Lenovo, at least don't write documentation with glaring errors.

Finally, when I do launch the About window it is showing two controllers.  One is at firmware version 36 and the other at version 59:

At this point I may have to submit a repair ticket for this machine.

Here is an update: I completely uninstalled and reinstalled the Thunderbolt Software package and now there's only one controller showing up.  It's still at NVM firmware version 59.0 and the firmware updater is still not working however.  I tried running the firmware update from the GUI and from an admin PowerShell with FwUpdateTool2010.exe 1 -s as per the readme.
