USB Hub & Host Controller cycling after using Vantage

2020-07-21, 5:30 AM

On July 17th I used Lenovo Vantage to update my system (P1 Gen2). Updates included:

-Integrated Camera Driver for Realtek (Windows 10 Version 1709 or Later) - 10 [64] - 10.0.19041.20143

-Thunderbolt Firmware Update Tool (Hybrid Graphics) for (Windows 10 Version 1709 or Later) - 10 [64] - 1.1.11.18-N2OTF12W

It seems like since that time, if I scan my system for updates with Lenovo Vantage from the Windows app or from Lenovo's website, my USB hub and host controller cycle every minute or so. By cycle, I mean those devices are dropped and re-added to my system. The symptom is that I can hear the Windows sound for a device being plugged in and unplugged. I see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon pop up for less than a second (I had to record my screen to actually see this in the video frame by frame). I don't see anything that appears to be relevant in the Windows event logs. This issue starts after using Lenovo vantage to check for updates. I have to restart the system for the problem to go away. The next time I scan for updates, the problem comes back -- and continues even after closing Vantage (until a reboot).

I wrote a quick application to log hardware plug and play events. Here is what I see after using Lenovo Vantage:

Remove:

@usbhub3.inf,%usbhub3.roothubdevicedesc%;USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

Remove:

@System32\drivers\usbxhci.sys,#1073807361;%1 USB %2 eXtensible Host Controller - %3 (Microsoft);(Intel(R),3.1,1.10)

@usbxhci.inf,%pci\cc_0c0330.devicedesc%;USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller

Add:

@System32\drivers\usbxhci.sys,#1073807361;%1 USB %2 eXtensible Host Controller - %3 (Microsoft);(Intel(R),3.1,1.10)

@usbxhci.inf,%pci\cc_0c0330.devicedesc%;USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller

Add:

@usbhub3.inf,%usbhub3.roothubdevicedesc%;USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

In case it's related... On the 15th I installed the Windows 10 Cumulative Update 2020-07. I do not have Feature Update version 2004 since "it's not ready for my device."

My speculation (and it's purely that) is that the Lenovo update scanner probes something related to the USB controller (Intel device?) and makes it unhappy. Whether this is a software, firmware, or driver issue... I don't know.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Suggestions?

Thanks!

The Vantage "Check for Updates" does a probe and has the behavior you described. But it should be a one-time thing during "Check for Updates". What you described about this kind of probe continuing until you reboot, is not expected. Is there anything (such as a dock or USB device) connected to the system that might have something to do with this?

No peripherals are connected. The only connection is the power adapter. I have no devices in any of the expansion slots (e.g., no USB ports are populated).

Any suggestions? Or do I need to open a support ticket? I'm leery that tech support will be helpful and will jump to throwing hardware at it. (that has been my experience with support to date)

I'm experiencing the same issue. I see PnP events in the Windows event viewer under 'Applications and Services Logs'/Microsoft/Windows/DriverFrameworks-UserMode/Operational every 15-35 seconds. I dual-boot to different versions of Windows 10, and both are affected. Disabling LenovoVantageService and all other Lenovo services has no effect. In device manager, I also tried disabling power management for 'Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller' and everything below it (when viewing by connection). A reboot temporarily resolves the issue, but it comes back without manually running Vantage.

I believe Vantage does it's own, automatic checking, on some frequency. When this happens, the problems starts (or manually running Vantage).

A bunch of updates were released for my laptop on 7/23. I have installed all of them (manually from the website). No changes to the bad behavior.

More software/driver updates were released yesterday. I installed all updates. Issue persists. I guess I'll need to give tech support a call next week.

I don't have Vantage installed on one of my machines, although I do have Lenovo System Update 5.07.0097.

I get the same issue when running System Update. I assume it's using the same engine or taking similar actions that trigger the issue.

Re:USB Hub & Host Controller cycling after using Vantage

I found a workaround (probably not a permanent fix). It seems that Lenovo or Intel broke something with firmware/software updates related to the USB controllers/hubs or power management.

Workaround: Clear "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the properties of each USB controller and root hub in Device Manager. Once set this way, the controller/hub cycling no longer happens.
