thanks for your reply. I did exactly what you described but it does not work for me. After the reboot still both the pad and the point don´t work.
If I go to Start/Lenovo Ultranav and then choose the ThinkPad menu I can only choose "only use Touchpad" from the very first drop-down menu. Initially there is nothing selected from that menu. If I select "only use Touchpad" it still does not work.
Both pointing devices are enabled in the BIOS.

I reckon this must be a software issue. Because I've changed the touchpad module before I found out the solution that works for me.

Now it gets more confusing:
for some reason I get a warning in the "Lenovo Solution Center" saying "SM-Bus-Controller not installed" ? I can´t see the connection there?! I guess I can fix this by installing the Intel Chipset SW. Any ideas?

 

Edit:

Installed Intel Chipset SW and after a short moment the error message from the LSC dissapered.

Also deinstalled ultranav driver again and followed same steps as before.

Touchpad and Trackpoint still not working...

Scroll all the way down and choose a previous version, presumably 2.16 or earlier.

just downgraded the BIOS to version 2.16 and after the reboot the touchpad only worked. Then I changed in the BIOS settings both touchpad and trackpoint status to "disabled" and rebooted. Funny thing: Touchpad was working - point not.
Rebooted again and changed BIOS settings to enable (both) and then everything worked the way it should. I did now 4-5 reboots and everything seems to be O.K.

Anyway it was very annoying to spend so much time with this problem just because Lenovo Solution Center updated the BIOS... One would think this should be a very easy to avoid bug...

After about 1-2 months (over 100+ hours)I have finally found and fixed the problem. My "ultraNav" is working back to %100. You all will not believe all the things that I tried to do to get this fixed. I got the keyboard replaced and the "ultraNav" pad replaced... Nothing! I have reformatted the computer twice (using lenovo system restore)... nothing! I have reverted back to BIOS update 2.16... nothing! I tried many software and driver updates.... Nothing!

 

Then it hit me! I reverted back to the pervious "embedded systems controller" version which is attached to the BIOS 2.15 update. I realized that even though the problems all started after a BIOS update (2.16) that is also when it pushed a new "embedded systems controller" version, I did not realize that at the time so I incorrectly blamed the BIOS. This was the friggin' problem all along. So, to make a very long and annoying story short all you have to do is download the BIOS 2.15 update on the website (it comes with the controller update) and install it. [revert it back]

 

When I did this just like magic, everything was the way it should have been the whole time. I guess the "embedded systems controller" stopped recognizing the "ultraNav"as a "ultraNav" awesome mouse and only saw it as a regular plain jane mouse instead. The "ultraNav" drivers and software did not even recognize it either, that is how bad this update was...

Downgrading to 2.15 did not help. Actually I first encountered the problem after upgrade to 2.15 from seomthing like 2.11 or 2.13 I don't remember exactly. And you cannot downgrade below 2.15.

 

As just after the purchase I was also having issues mentioned in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W540-won-t-wake-up/td-p/1709441 I had to reboot computer very often by turning it off completely. That may have hidden the problem.

 

Currently I just disabled trackpad and trackpoint in BIOS and use plain mouse at all.

I am having a window between business trips next week. So I'll try to find time to visit Lenovo service myselft or maybe our IT does that for me. (our IT mostly buy Dell, and I had inisisted on Lenovo).

 

Interestingly though, disabling trackpad in BIOS sometimes does not turn it off sometimes.
