Unable to install Ubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo P14s Gen 1 Type 20Y2

2021-06-04, 20:29 PM

I recently purchased Lenovo P14s Gen 1 Type 20Y2 pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro and I want to install Ubuntu 20.04 on it. I tried to follow the guide here but the first step suggests to "change the “Controller Mode” to “AHCI mode”" which I am not able to perform as the Storage option is not there in my BIOS config. I am attaching the screenshot of the "Config" window.

Please note that I have used the "simple text" UI instead of "graphical".

My system configuration is as follows.

Hello,

So your BIOS set up menu choices are slighly different than those choices displayed upon the installation guide?    Lenovo fields a plethora of models and not all of them are the same.   If the storage configuration menu item is not presented on your BIOS the settings are not configurable by the user, it is likely your exact machine only has one choice for this item, and obviously that choice is activated.

Have you tested your machine by downloading the liveUSB image of your desired distribution?  (Ubuntu has a plethora of versions, not all of them work on every kind of PC.)  So the first step is to download a Live USB, boot from it and test to see if everything works using the Live USB instance.  So Graphics mode you want to use, Alternate graphic card if that is installed, Ethernet, wired, wireless, wwan, and others.   ONLY if these work from the live USB consider installing that onto your system drive.   Ubuntu also has methods to use it without installing to your system drive, so the Windows Pro installation can remain pristine and untouched.   An older way is to use the "Persistent USB" option.  Some distributions allow encryption of home partition upon the persistent USB...

I prefer to leave BIOS settings at factory defaults and then boot from the LiveUSB.   IF secure boot setting prevents booting, I find a different distribution that WILL boot with secure boot enabled.

Let us know how it goes!

Just to second what UsedToBeRich says - you can boot the live USB version of Ubuntu and check it out and make sure everything works before installing it.

In the BIOS the main recommendation for this machine is to change the sleep mode from Windows to Linux S3 - that's needed on the AMD platforms. We sometimes recommend disabling secure boot - just because it can give headaches with Nvidia drivers - but that doesn't apply here so you can leave it on if you want. The rest should be fine keeping the same settings as Windows

I can get you the Ubuntu certified image if you want, but as a word of warning we haven't yet passed energy-certification with it which is why that system isn't online and images aren't available on the support site. The image also completely wipes your disk so you're probably better off just using the regular Ubuntu image at this point as all the support for this platform will have been rolled into the general image.

Also make sure you have the latest firmware updates - recommend installing those from Windows before you switch (especially the camera firmware if it's available as that's not available on LVFS yet)

Thank you both for the help. Something was wrong with my pen drive as it was not getting recognised in the boot options menu. I used some other pen drive and I was able to install Ubuntu without changing any setting in BIOS.

Great!

Do change the sleep setting or you'll have suspend/resume issues.

Sleep settings in Ubuntu? It's 5 minutes by default. Could you please elaborate why it's needed? Thanks in advance!

I mean the setting in the BIOS - if you press F1 during early boot to enter the BIOS settings, under power there should be a sleep setting and you'll want to change it from "Windows/Modern Standby" to "Linux/S3" (or something like that)

You need this on the AMD systems as modern standby support isn't available yet - AMD are working on it

Done! The option is just called "Linux" on my system. I am assuming it is for optimisation of battery usage?

Great!

It's there just because Linux on AMD doesn't support Modern Standby suspend yet (the default for Windows). AMD are working on that upstream but it's not ready yet.

Hi! Changing the sleep setting to "Linux" caused a problem. Whenever I shut down my laptop while using Linux, it automatically restarted. Shutting down from Windows was working fine. I reverted this setting you asked me to change and it works well for both OSs.
