Upgrade Advice Please (from T60p to.... ?)

2009-01-24, 15:02 PM

Hi Guys,

I currently have a T60p, T7600 2.53Ghz CPU, 3GB RAM, 100GB Drive, 15.1" 4:3 Screen, 128Mb Nvidia discrete graphics, I think, possible 256MB I forget :P . I've had it a couple of years and am now looking to upgrade it to a newer model.

However, Lenovo seem to have changed their range lately and I'm not sure if I should be going for a T500 or what seems like the more powerful W500/700.

I don't really need the wacom tablet of the W700, so I am guessing I should be considering the W500 range.

I don't really travel at all, I just use a laptop for convenience in the front room on the sofa, but I like the power of the T60p for playing games on.

Can any one give me any advice? Much appreciated,

Lozman.

Is there any reason you want more than the T500? I don't know too much about Lenovo's line these days (I just moved from an Alienware mobile workstation to the W700) but I'd think that either the T500 or the W500 would be good for you, since you really aren't doing any rendering/artistry/video editing. However, as far as I now ThinkPad doesn't do Directx focused cards for gaming. You might get better gaming performance for your buck with a different manufacturer altogether.

True. I wouldn't be adverse to another manufacturer but I really don't get on with the touchpads. I love the touchpoint on my thinkpad so any replacement would need one of those.

Surely your W700 is good for games right? It has a 1GB Nvidia discrete graphics card does it not?

That's fair enough. In that case I would recommend the W500, the firegl even though it's an opengl card should have more than enough power to crunch through games. Personally, I don't play games on my computer, but I develop using directx occasionally and it's fine, very stable, the geforce equivalent is always going to be a bit faster but I don't think by much.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually I just realised, I told you a lie, my T60p actually has the ATI card too! :/ sorry not sure why I said it had an Nvidia; getting mixed up with my main PC.

The ATI card in my T60p has always run the games I play more than fast enough, so yes I agree, I am looking quite strongly at the W500. The W700 looks really nice, but fact of matter is it's way more expensive, and its a bit of a beast too! 17" screen and full size keyboard with dedicated keypad... man, thats a serious notebook.

So, the W500 seems like the right choice for me... it's basically pretty much the replacement of the T60p right? There is no W500p?

Thanks,

Lozman.

T61p was the last ThinkPad with the "P" designation, but it would be fair to say that W series keeps going that route...serious workstation laptops, or "desktop replacements" as some of us would like to say...

Be forewarned that you're likely to be disappointed with the LCDs on newer ThinkPads after IPS FlexView on your T60p...apart from that, they are still very fine machines.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

There's not W500p but I don't think it is a right choice for you. Both T500 and W500 have the same card now (as opposite to t60 and T60p where the latter was superior). The difference is drivers and card bios which translates into W500 having worse performance in games (at most it is equal) so there is no point going for W500 if you are going to game and not work on it.

You can get a T500 with a better processor for the money saved on w500 and have better performance.

Lastly I would actually advice to go for Dell M4400 - it has a trackpoint and the graphics card is far better. It is still in a same price as W500

Hmmmm I see. Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

I must admit I didn't know about the trackpoints on those Dells so thanks for alerting me to them. How does the build quality compare with the Thinkpads?

Ok, seems I do need to rethink this is a bit more detail. I've had thinkpads for years and love them, but it seems the new range just might not cut it unless I go for a W700 which is a bit overkill for what I want to use it for.

It could well turn out to be a Dell :/
