Vantage cannot update Thunderbolt FW nor Dock Firmware - fails over and over again.

Vantage and System update says it is critical to do these two update, but continue to fail. Of course we are getting used to Lenovo machines not really working anymore and everything that has to do with docking and thunderbolt being unstable, but please - couldn't you fix stuff like this. You most likely constantly spy sending back telemetry and then you don't fix installation problems. The picture below is from Vantage after having "done" the same installations over and over again - these three just don't update. I haven't called Lenovo support since they will probably as usual just ask you to reinstall windows (as rebuilding a house when the door binds) and after several reinstalls - maybe change of hardware, they say things work as intended. (can you read I'm fed up with Lenovo. Loved then for decades, but now it seems like they finally lost it and gave the ... to their users).

And I have now tried on the same computer, but with the original Windows installed from Lenovo, and the problem is the same. And on another docking station. Problem the same. Lenovos drivers and firmware simply is not tested and does not work and they don't really seem to care.

I have the same problem from 3 May 2021:

 

Integrated Firmware for Thunderbolt Function (Windows 10 Version 1709 or Later) - 10 [64] - 17.0.0.18-N2CHF25W Failed to install: 02/05/2021 2:11 pm Package Size: 1.33 MB Release Date: 14/04/2021 



This is on a Windows 20H2 host. Now my secure Windows 1909 VM can't access the dock, which I use for that VM's corporate LAN connection.This is a major hindrance for me and will affect others in our large corporation. Really don't know why we are using Lenovo as these problems seem to occur regularly.

Hello,

 

Try setting the security level for Thunderbolt 3 in the ThinkPad's BIOS (UEFI) firmware level to 0, and then downloading and running the firmware updates manually.

I almost always just download the updates and install them manually. High success rate on critical upgrades IMO.

My security level was already at the lowest level, so did not matter. And if that was a prerequisite, the installer should prompt for that.

So do I, and have had success with that before upgrading the docking station, which never worked from Vantage or System Update (which is embarrassing and show they do not properly test their solutions). This did not work in this case either, though.

I did get time today to try the manual update, and yay! it worked and I'm back on the LAN rather than wifi. Thanks.

The install works if you turn off BIOS Assist for Thunderbolt in BIOS (a poorly documented feature, that is needed for Linux, not sure why). This made it possible to install both the Docking station firmware and the Intel Thunderbolt firmware update.

 

Now it then instead means, that the external screen does not turn on automatically, but you have to move the display port cable to the other connector every time after having booted, to enable the external screen.

 

(Nice Lenovo, but I'm not surprised. The P53 and external Thunderbolt dock must be the most buggy and expensive laptop you ever made.)

My TB3 Gen 2 was one of the best tech purchases ever. With the world of COVID and working at home I had to recreate a dual monitor setup and it has increased my productivity from working with just the P43s on a dining room table by leaps and bounds. I don't see why people keep slamming the dock. It simply works and is reliable.
