Vantage crashes

2021-02-16, 15:57 PM

W10 pro64.

After updating with KB4601050 (.NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8)  and KB4601319 (to OS build 19042.804), everytime I launch "System Update" from Vantage I get the following errors:

I am using "Commercial Vantage".

Maybe it's time for an update of the app?

Re:Vantage crashes

Identified the problem in a forgotten policy setting.

  • Group Policy: Administrative Templates\System\Kernel DMA Protection\Enumeration policy for external devices incompatible with Kernel DMA Protection

That was set at:

0 - Block all (Most restrictive): Devices with DMA remapping compatible drivers will be allowed to enumerate at any time. Devices with DMA remapping incompatible drivers will never be allowed to start and perform DMA at any time.

It seems that the driver for Thunderbolt Controller - 15EB is not DMA-remapping capable.

Cannot understand the logic behind it, but it is what it is.

Changing the setting to anything else or the policy to "Non configured", returns things back to normal.

Hello abax2000,

Greetings!

Have you tried to rollback the updates?

You may also update the Vantage app.

Update us how it goes

fwdetectcmd1911.exe is the tool that Vantage uses to detect the current version of Thunderbolt firmware, to determine if it needs to be updated or not.  Based on your report, I checked my P52 here.  I applied all of the latest Windows Updates (including 20H2 cumulative update and .NET cumulative updates), but this problem is not happening for me.

Please check in BIOS Setup -> Config -> Thunderbolt to make sure that BIOS Assist Mode is disabled.  If it is enabled, this is a wrong configuration that could cause this kind of problem to happen.

BIOS Assist is Disabled, but I also have Kernel DMA Protection active.

Which is probably the issue.

BTW, since Kernel DMA Protection is active I see this

Before that, the list was populated with my dock.

Any workaround on these?

I have no idea.  I didn't reproduce the problem here.

On my ThinkPad P52, Kernel DMA Protection is On, and Thunderbolt Device in Device Manager is normal.  When I check for updates in Vantage, there is not any error logged about fwdetectcmd1911.exe in the problem reports.  You may be having some problem with Thunderbolt controller in your specific machine, please try shutdown the P52, unplug power, and remove the battery for 2 minutes.  This can sometimes clear up strange Thunderbolt problems.
