Volume indicator gone

2009-03-03, 15:43 PM

Hi,

I no longer have the green volume indicator nor the screen intensity indicator. They disappeared after I uninstalled the presentation director. I reinstalled it but neither volume or intensity indicators came back. This is a minor inconveniance but I would like to have them back. How do I go about doing this?

I found a solution!!!!

It involves going in to the registry which is not too appealing but its a simple change so not so intimidating. It make total sense when you look at the value for the OSD font size its set to lowest possible value (00 00 00 00). Not surprising that we cant read anything...

I followed what was proposed in the following thread and everything is working just fine:

P.S. need I mention to back up before messing up registry keys...

You might want to try going to the "Personalization" control panel of Vista, then selecting "Display Settings" (the bottom choice on the list), then pressing the "Advanced Settings" button, then finally selecting the tab entitled "On-Screen Display".  That is sort of like a control panel for the On-Screen Display (OSD).

I am also having a bit of a problem - my OSD exists after having removed Presentation Director, but even after having selected the 'large' size in the above control panel, the actual size of the displayed text is only a few pixels high.  So, perhaps check to see if you are encountering the same problem - the information is being displayed, but it is so tiny that it can easily be missed.  In my case, I can just see few little green pixels horizontally centered in the screen, above the bottom taskbar, when I press the volume up or down keys.

Good luck!

That was a good direction to look at but ultimately I still cant see anything of use. I do see that something is  being displayed. Similarly to you I get a few pixels centered on the task bar itself that seem to respond to changes in volume or screen intensity (I played with the font, size and fade settings with little change). Going through the display option of the GPU does not feel like the way to restore the original volume or screen intensity gauge. Are these indicators coming from Lenovo software (+ we both removed them by removing presentation director)?

I had managed to do the same thing on my old T43 but since it was not new I did not care to put the effort into fixing the inconvenience I never found a solution.

Thank you for your suggestion. There has to be a way to restore these!

updating...

ok so since I lost the OSD for volume and screen intensity after uninstalling presentation director I reinstalled it, reinstalled the HOTKEY driver and the system interface drivers and still no improvement.

What is odd is those little pixels appearing about the center of the taskbar seem like it could actually be the normal OSD but with an offset towards the bottom of the screen. If somehow it was possible to designate where to have this show up on the screen I might be able to recover the OSD with actual OSD...

Hello Myrkorr:

Thanks very much for posting that solution, and the link to thinkpads.com.

I did exactly what you suggested and it solved my problem.

For the benefit of others who may read this in the future, be aware that after you make the registry changes, you have to restart the Thinkpad before the changes will take effect.
